Saturday's PhotoHunting: Room

Room with a view . . .

The very beautiful Casa Matilde is located in the small town of Praiano on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.  From each room I had spectacular views of Positano and the Isle of Capri off in the distance. And in the evenings I enjoyed some of the most spectacular sunsets that I've ever seen.

Saturday's PhotoHunting: Two

My tale of how two oars in a boat made it to the ocean.  First, this requires two Italian dudes, not one.

The two Italian dudes push the two oars and boat over these wooden planks.

One of the two dudes, moves the planks from the back . . . .

to the front .  . .

Then the two Italian dudes push again.

Until the two oars and boat reach the ocean.

Push just a little bit more over this wave.

Okay, that's good.  Now one of the two dudes climbs in.

The one dude then puts his two oars from his boat in the ocean and voila.  Another day at the office.

And what a beautiful office Positano, Italy makes.

The End.  :)

Saturday's PhotoHunting: Watch Sunsets

It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and
not dream. ~ Bern Williams

In 2011, I was very lucky to watch 3 weeks worth of gorgeous sunsets from my apartment in the small town of Praiano which is on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.  And each sunset that I gazed upon filled my imagination with dreams of visiting new and amazing destinations.

Then in 2012, I visited South America for the first time to see ice glaciers, a magnificent waterfall and immerse myself in the bustling city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I love sunsets . . . .

Saturday's PhotoHunting: Favorite Food

 My most favorite food . . .

Of course you can't have a delicious pizza without something nice to wash it down with like a glass of bubbly Prosecco.

And it would be a sin not to top off your meal with a yummy scoop (or two) of gelato . . .

And finally, the pièce de résistance of this entire dining experience is that I am enjoying my most favorite food while sitting at a beach side restaurant in the small town of Positano with a fabulous view of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Thank you to Chez Black in Positano for providing my theme photos for this week!

Saturday's PhotoHunting: Sports

Soccer is a very popular sport in Italy and around the world.  Last year while visiting the San Luca Church in Praiano on the Amalfi Coast of Italy I discovered a very lively game of soccer being played just above the church.

Most of the Amalfi Coast towns are built on steep hill sides where flat sections can be hard if not impossible to find.  But with their love for the game this small soccer field with imitation grass and enclosed by a high wired fence is a source of great excitement on this pleasant Sunday afternoon.

There are no big bleachers here, because there's really no room.  Instead handrails along the side and above the fenced in field is where the fans can enjoy the competition.  I stood in between two very enthusiastic fans and became caught up in the cheering frenzy.  It wasn't hard to do since I'm a sports fan anyway and staying in Praiano for three weeks gave me a sense of hometown pride.  So I cheered along side my fellow residents. :)

The game was quite exciting and it was fun cheering on our team. During timeouts, the view of the amalfi coast and the beautiful green Maiolica tiled cupola of the Church of San Luca located just in front of the field was a wonderful distraction.  :)

Saturday's PhotoHunting: Paintings

A local artist painting the very beautiful town of Positano .  . .

While traveling I enjoy looking at artwork that can be found in famous museums, but I also love admiring artwork from the many talented street artists.  Over the years, I've managed to purchase several beautiful pieces which I will treasure always.

Saturday's PhotoHunting: Cooking

Cooking while traveling can be quite a fun experience.  Last year I traveled to the small town of Praiano located on the Amalfi Coast of Italy and being in an apartment I was able to dab a little in the kitchen.

First, I'm off to my favorite neighborhood store located just down the street from my apartment to buy some groceries.  My apartment had a very useful food translation guide which I took with me to make sure I was buying the right ingredients.

The plan was to make some pasta and while standing by the sauce section, I contemplated making it from scratch, but then this local Italian lady whizzed by me, picked up two bottles of already made pasta sauce and dashed over to the cash register.  Well, that was good enough for me too, so I picked up a bottle of the same brand sauce, a package of pasta, a chicken patty and salad fixings.

I prepare all of my pots, pans and utensils and proceed with my Amalfi Coast Cooking experience. :)

First, I boil my pasta, then I fry my chicken patty and warm up my pasta sauce . . . I prepare my salad, then popped open a bottle of Prosecco and pour . . .

Placed my entree onto my plate and voila!  I forgot to snap a photo of my salad and glass of prosecco. :)

It wasn't made from scratch but I thought it was pretty delicious and I was quite proud of myself.  Sometimes it's the little everyday experiences while traveling that can make me smile and go whoo hoo!

And finally, the whole cooking experience wouldn't be complete without the always scintillating clean-up duties. :)

My Long Day to Paestum, Italy to See the Greek Temples

My long day to Paestum started here on the Sita Bus from Praiano to Amalfi. I then took a connecting bus on to Salerno. It was a lovely bus ride along the beautiful and winding road of the Amalif Coast.

My bus driver, although very good was a bit on the slow side and we barely arrive at the Salerno Station before departure time.  And with a long line at the ticket counter, I was getting concerned.

As luck would have it, the train is delayed. I was glad, but I was also bummed because the delay meant less time in Paestum. :(

I meet a very nice couple and I joked with them that I'll watch when they get off to make sure I get off at the right stop.  Both the wife and husband made sure to let me know that they are getting off one stop before Paestum because they are going to the B&B first.  That was nice of them to alert me.  The wife later comes to me and tells me that they think that they may have missed their stop, but I am certain that they didn't.

So we arrive at a stop and they get off.  I realize that I also saw a couple of other people get off as well and it finally hit me that we are in Paestum.  Well, she did warn me.  I dash toward the exit door but can't open it and the train begins to roll!

Now I almost never ever swear but when I stood there in dismay I blurted out "Shit".  There was a young girl and an older gentlemen who heard me. Very embarrassed about that. My heart was racing and I felt a sense of helplessness and a feeling that the day is ruined.

I turned over to the gentlemen and he said something in Italian, lifted his shoulder, had a little grin and pointed his hand towards the front.  He didn't speak English and I didn't understand Italian, but I understood what he meant. Translation . . . "Chill, it ain't no big "shit", just get off at the next stop and go back!" Ha ha! My heart calmed down, I smiled and said Grazie.

When we arrived at the next station, the girl brought me to the taxi stand so I could return to Paestum.

It was actually a very pleasant drive and the area was quite beautiful.

I finally arrived in Paestum. Yay!  And let me tell you the greek temples were spectacular!  I was able to spend about 3 hours there.

I wanted to spend a bit longer, but decided that I will take an earlier train back so I wouldn't have to take the last bus back to Praino (just in case).  It was a long walk back to the station in Paestum, but it was a lovely day and it was very enjoyable.

I arrive at the train station and see the "big" Paestum sign.  I can't believe that I missed that sign. Oh well, spilled milk, water under the bridge, no big "shit".

I arrive in Salerno.

I felt that I had just enough time to walk a couple of blocks to get some Gelato! :)   I finish up the last of my gelato at the bus stop.  I then see my bus, I step up to the curb, only to see it drive by! Shit! I find out that there are two bus stops and the Sita Bus stop is located across the parking lot right in front of the station!

Well, after a long 1.5 hours waiting for the next bus, I finally arrive in Amalfi. It is just about getting dark.  I'm there in plenty of time to catch the next bus to Pariano.

It's darker more, and I'm wondering where that bus is?  Well, I find out that the schedule changed and the bus I wanted was cancelled and the next bus won't leave for another hour.  Shit!

I wanted to grab something to eat, but was so afraid that some crazy shit will happen again and I'd miss the last bus back to Praiano.  So I wait, hungry and a little tired by the bus stop.  I was determined not to miss this bus.

Finally, here I am, back where I started the day....on the Sita bus heading home to Praiano! My thoughts on the winding road  back . . . "Wow, this whole day was some kind of Shit!"

Although I had some mishaps and probably sweared more on this day than I have ever done in years, I have to say that it was all worth it.  Being in Amalfi, so close to Paestum and not make an effort to see it, was not acceptable to me.  Life is just too short to put things off.

Now, on a serious note, I have to say this past week was very solemn for me and I decided to write this post as a personal way to sort things out.  First, here is one of my favorite all time quotes.

"It is not the years in your life
but the life in your years that counts."
~ Adlai Stevenson

This quote reminds me of a long time Slow Traveler who over the years, I have grown to respect and admire for his generosity and zest to enjoy and live life to the fullest.  Although I shall so miss his postings on the community forum, I believe that his adventuous spirit will continue to be present in all of us who were touched by the way he lived his life.  Thank you so much for your example and for reminding us to live our own lives to the fullest.  RIP rr

ABC Wednesday: K is for . . .

~ Kindness ~

In 2010 I wrote a post called Let Kindness Be Your Guide which is part of my Travel Thoughts series that I started.  The premise of the post is that while traveling solo I am always so touched with the amount of kindness I receive from perfect strangers, especially at moments when I needed their kindness the most.

I thought it would be cool to use this week's K letter to continue my series and share two more encounters I experienced in my travels since I wrote the post.

And here they are:

2010- I traveled to Amsterdam, Belgium and Berlin for 3 weeks.  On my first day arriving in Berlin I decided to venture out to Alexander Platz to visit the beautiful Christmas markets.  I took their subway there, but on my way back to my apartment the subway line that I needed to take was closed one stop before I had to exit.  First, a nice local was kind enough to explain what was happening and gave me directions on how to catch a bus to my stop after the train stopped.  Although I followed his directions I still got lost because by this time it was dark.  I had no clue where I was.  Suddenly I saw a Berliner walking up eating a sandwhich. I stopped to ask him for directions. He waited patiently while I pulled up the address of my apartment from my itouch.  He recognized it immediately and with a smile told me to just walk across the park and pointed out the building. I was so relieved and happy.  I couldn't thank him enough.

2012 - While visiting the Amalfi Coast in Italy, I decided to hike the famous Sentiero degli Dei ("Path of the Gods") trail up high above the coast.  Although, I am perfectly fearless (well to a point anyway) traveling solo for some reason while I was up in the trails by myself, I became rather scared at one point. I made the mistake of watching the movie 127 Hours before my trip and my imagination took hold of me.  I started to think about what would happen if I fell and was stranded up here in the hills for hours. I just had one bottle of water to last me. Suddenly this dog out of no where appeared and literally kept me company and escorted me on the trail until I reached the town of Nocella. As soon as we reached the town, he took off.  I will never forget this little guy's kindness. :) Here's a little quick video that I did of him (I have to warn you that there is a lot of shake).

So as the lyrics in the song by Jackie DeShannon says, Let kindness be your guide . . .
