Saturday's PhotoHunting: Jug

Honestly, I wasn't sure I'd have a photo this week, but thankfully I found one in my photo library that I could use.   

While briefly visiting Munich, Germany in 2006 I found these friendly and very colorful lions dressed up around the city which were really cute.  And who would've thought that one of them would be holding up a "jug" that would be perfect for this week's PH theme. Whew! :)

Saturday's PhotoHunting: Water

Citius, Altius, Fortius is the Olympics motto. It is Latin for Faster, Higher, Stronger and each athlete will strive to do just that.  To be the best in the world, at this time and in this moment.  

Ever since I can remember I have been a huge fan of the Olympics and tonight the eyes of the world will converge on Sochi, Russia to watch these amazing athletes compete in the 22nd Winter Olympics.  I love the dedication, competitive drive and mutual respect displayed by these athletes and I am looking forward to the opening ceremony tonight.

In keeping with the Olympic spirit, here is a photo I took at the Olympic park in Munich, Germany.

The water in this pool once embraced Olympic athletes from all over the world in the swimming & diving competitions.  I am keeping my fingers crossed and will say a prayer that we will have a very competitive, safe and peaceful Olympics in Sochi.

Saturday's PhotoHunting: Graveyards

To be honest, I'm not really big on visiting graveyards or cemeteries, because I tend to spook easy. 

However, when I visited Prague in 2006 I summoned up the courage to visit the Old Jewish Cemetery because of the history behind it.  It was so sad to see the headstones and to know why they were here in this way and why.  It is an experience that I will never forget.   

Visitors are not allowed to take photographs and I respected that rule, so this is the only photo I took to capture the experience.  I blogged about it here. It is a photo that I took just outside of the cemetery which is on the other side of the wall to the right. 

I took this next photo of the Glasgow Necropolis in Scotland.  Although I did not visit the graveyard, I snapped this photo from a distance looking out of a window from the St. Mungo Museum. If you look closely, you can see the really large headstones, which this graveyard is known for having.

ABC Wednesday : L is for . . .

~ Light ~

While standing on the Charles Bridge in Prague I took this photo capturing three different light sources.  

There's light from the Lamp Posts on the bridge itself, I love the light that is illuminating the very beautiful Prague Castle and finally check out the reflection of light on the river Vltava.  

I love Prague and hope to return there someday.  Maybe when I finally get a chance to visit Budapest. :)

Here's my hotel room's cluttered desktop in Prague. One of the fun things about Independent travel is having the freedom to create and/or change your itinerary on the fly.  Which is what I'm sure I was probably doing here. :)

Going for Gold . . .

Hey, hey, hey . . . it's AVP Time! This weekend is the AVP Crocs Tour at Hermosa Beach and I think we could be witnessing future gold medalists (Misty May and Kerri Walsh) play this weekend. They will be representing the USA in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China this summer and I can't wait. On the men's side, I think Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers have a great chance to medal as well. They're not as consistent as the women's team, but I think they should at the very least medal.

I'm such a huge fan of the Olympics that when I was in Munich, Germany for a couple of days in 2006 I went to visit the Olympic Park which was built for the 1972 Munich Games. In more ways then we would like, I think the 1972 Olympics will always be remembered for both the athletic excellence that was achieved by many of the athletes during the spirit of competition and for the unforgettable tragedy that unfolded. It was an upsetting time in Olympic history and it changed the way security measures are implemented for all future Olympic Games since then.

Once I figured out the system(which by the way is very easy in Munich), I got on their subway and it brought me directly to the Olympic Park. I spent a very pleasant morning walking around and taking in the historical significance. It's so great to learn that the Olympic Park was transformed into a public recreation facility for all the residents to enjoy. It was so cool being there and seeing everything in person. Beyond comparison . . .

This month's photo was taken on my 2006 solo trip to Prague in the Czech Republic. One of the most amazing things about Prague besides it's incredible history and it's wonderful people is the Architecture. Thousands of years of architectural history shaped what is now considered to be the most beautiful city in all of Europe. During my visit I was able to study the many Medieval, Baroque, and Renaissance buildings scattered throughout the cobblestone streets of Prague and it was an awesome experience!

This month's photo features these golden yellow buildings set below Prague Castle just on the edge of the famous Vltava river. From what I have read, buildings sprang up during the 16th century on Kampa Island or what is also known today as "Little Venice."

I sort of have to disagree with whoever made that comparison. I've been to both Prague and Venice and I find both cities to be unique (and beyond comparison) in their own special way.

If you love architecture, history and having a good time on your vacations, you will love visiting Prague! I definitely want to go back there just as I do Venice, because there is just so much to see. This photo is another example of the unique and interesting buildings that I discovered while exploring this fascinating City. It is located in the Jewish Quarter (Josefov) one block away from the Pinkas Synagogue. See what I mean when I say unique!
