While visiting the San Diego Safari Park with my sister last year, I spotted these beautiful flamingos at sleep and/or resting with their heads laying on their back.
Looking at a wider shot I took of them, I also realized that some of them were sleeping in this uncomfortable position with only one leg on the ground and their other leg tucked just below their bodies.
Now I can sleep while in a sitting position, but there is no way that I can sleep standing up and on one leg.
One theory as to why Flamingos sleep this way is that it keeps them warm during colder weather. However, some experts have observed them to sleep/rest on one leg during warm months too. Bless their hearts. I guess only these beautiful birds truly know the reason why they sleep the way that they do.
Those are amazing photos, Kathy! In my own life, I've only ever seen flamingos awake! ;D
ReplyDeleteHi YTSL, thanks so much for your comments and for liking my photos. and thank also for the very kind mention in your post. I also love Annie's photos on Venice.
DeleteI don't think I've ever seen a flamingo sleeping also before this visit and to see a big group of them sleeping like that really caught my attention. It wasn't until I was looking through my libray for this weeks theme that I noticed that they were sleeping on one leg. I had focused more on how they swung their long necks around so they could lay their head on their backs. Ouch. But I guess it works for them.
Have a great weekend.
I see other birds resting on one leg too, but not asleep.
ReplyDeletefrankly my dear
Lovely shots. I have never seen them sleep on one leg too, that must be tiring..
ReplyDeleteEven my Yoga wouldn't help me to sleep in this position !
ReplyDeleteI LOVED the safari park. The zoo was amazing as well but the Safari Park just blew me away.
ReplyDeleteAmazing creatures! I could not sleep standing up either :) Great pics for the theme :)
ReplyDeleteHi everyone, thanks so much for liking my photos...
ReplyDeletePhotoCache, that's interesting that there are also other birds that stand on one leg. I'm so curious why they do it. I'm sure it is for a good reason that helps them in some manner.
ECL, yes I too would be very tired. I think I also read somewhere that they will switch legs, but still I wouldn't be able to rest or sleep in this mannger.
Gattina, :) I think yoga might help us to hold the move for a while longer, but I still don't think yoga would help us to sleep in this position. :)
Jerry, yes that park is pretty cool. My sis enjoyed it very much too especially the tram ride and the little shows they had.
Sue, :) Yes, they are amazing. And I too could not sleep standing up let alone on one leg. Yikes.
Thanks everyone. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
Wonderfull place, greeting from Belgium
ReplyDeleteHi retriever, thanks so much for your comments. And nice to see you from beautiful Belgium.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
That's so interesting about sleeping on one leg...such a strange phenomenon! I saw a few flamingos in the zoo near my dad's place (in England) but they weren't sleeping, they were wading around on both legs. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteHave a fantastic week!
Hi Anne, thanks so much for your comments and for liking my photos.Yes, I agree the standing on one leg while sleeping is definitely an interesting phenomenon. And its interesting flamingos outside of the US still sleep the same way. So interesting!
DeleteHave a fantastic week too.
