On ABC Wednesday I featured a photo of this beautiful beach in Hawaii. It was a bright, sunny gorgeous day where the blues of the ocean and skies and the greens of the grass and trees really jumped out at you from the photo.
I wanted to once again feature another beach photo but on this day it was a bit rainy, the wind was really kicking and there were these dark storm clouds hovering above, preventing the sun from shining through.
These photos are of the Marina Grande Beach in the seaside town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast of Southern Italy. Being there at that moment made me realize that there are just some places in this world that remain gorgeous, even in bad weather.
In keeping with the mood presented by the weather, I decided to post process my original photos in Black and White. Back in the old film days I used to really enjoy taking and processing B&W photos. I remember the excitement I had watching as the images came to life in the dark room. Now it is a matter of one click on a software like Photoshop CS4 which is what I used and voila.
And in case you're wondering, here is one of the photos in it's original color. :)
Great juxtaposition, K~ Have a good one. PS: I have PSE 9 and a few books but can't seem to find one that is sort of a 'recipe' = easy to use; tips on creative use, etc. Can you recommend one? M
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! Love your take on the theme. Love the Amalfi Coast, although have only driven past Positano on the bus. Hope to return someday, but in the meantime am glad to share in your memories - thanks!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend :)
I really like the black/white processing you did. Makes those sun beams stand out - very cool! Beautiful photos and another beautiful beach.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great weekend!
Hi everyone, thanks so much for your comments . . . .
ReplyDeleteM, thanks so much for comments. To best source (to be honest) for me in learning the ins and outs of photoshop has been watching Youtube videos. The reason I like it is because I have watch the video while I have my photoshop open and I can stop, pause and replay the instructions as I go along. I save the really good videos for future reference. For example, here's a pretty good one on layers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTY33YaC2i4
I'll do a search and view the videos that have a high number of views as I know it means that it is pretty good. I'm still trying to learn layers/masks.
Anne, thanks so much for liking my photo. I really enjoyed my time there. I hope that you get a chance to return to the area and visit Positano. And when you do, definitely eat at Chez Black if you do. Great food. :)
Annie, thanks so much for liking my B&W photos. Except for the last photo the other two had very little color in them so that's when I had the idea to make them B&W and it turned out pretty cool. :) I've been looking for an opportunity to learn a bit more on PS features. It was fun to try it. Have a great weekend too!
Thanks girls, thanks so much again for your kind comments. Have a great weekend.
As I am permanently sitting in the dark and rain, I honnestly prefer the last picture because it is NOT dark, lol !
ReplyDeleteHi Gattina, yes, for the last photo, I also like the color version better too. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for comments. Hope the rain goes away for you so you can enjoy the rest of your weekend.
The B&W pix appear like stills from a movie. :D Here's mine.
ReplyDeleteHi Raine, thanks so much for your comments. I think that's cool that it looks like stills from a B&W classic. I liked your photos too. Great choices for the two themes this week. Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeletebeautiful darkness :)
ReplyDeleteHi Tina, thanks so much for liking my photos. Even in dark clouds some things and places can still be beautiful. :) Have a great day today.
ReplyDeleteLove the black & white beach photos. Makes the stormy skies stand out even more.
ReplyDeleteHi G, thanks os much for liking my B&W photos. It went well with the mood imposed by the storm clouds. I have a little video I took "in the rain" too. :)
ReplyDeleteLovely in B&W as well as the photo in colour. Do you enjoy Photoshop as much as working with film?
ReplyDeleteHi EG Wow, thanks so much for your comments. I do enjoy Photoshop a lot for convenience and the ability to be very creative. It's great to have all the convenience and features of PS but there was just something so simple and pure about film photography with images straight from the camera.
ReplyDeleteReally beautiful photos, Kathy -- I love the atmospheric effects of the black + white processing!
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra, thanks so much for your comments. I like the B&W effect too.
ReplyDeleteHope you're still having a great time with your brother in Italy. Take care and have a wonderful week.
