My Review: Kinky Boots . . .

Sandra recently read my blog about my quest to adopt kittens. In my post I mentioned the names that I had already picked out for them. The first name of Ronda was recommended to me by Annie, because I enjoyed visiting this white village in Spain called Ronda. I love that town and that name. And if I get a second kitty, I wanted to name her Lola which is the nickname I gave a little kitten that I saw while visiting the Alhambra in Granada. She looked so much like Annie's precious cat Lulu!

After reading my blog, Sandra commented on my blog that she also liked the name Lola because it reminded her of the lead character in one of her favorite movies, “Kinky Boots.” Maria commented that she also enjoyed the movie and they both love the movie’s soundtrack which included . . . you guessed it! What Lola Wants!

After reading their comments, I ordered the movie on Netflix and watched it the very same evening that I received it. And what did I think? I absolutely loved it! I enjoy movies that reflect everything “human”. There was humor, drama, sadness and several interesting storylines between and about the characters. Basically, it is about a man who inherits a shoe factory (and most importantly the people who worked there) after his father passes away. The factory was basically handed down from one generation to the next. The son (played by Joel Edgerton) was forced to take over at a time when the business was failing. He is suddenly faced with the challenge of saving the business and all the jobs that depended on it. He makes a drastic and risky decision to change the product and befriends a drag queen (performer) named Lola (played wonderfully by Chiwetel Ejiofor) to help him.

This is a feel good, entertaining movie with a good sense of humor and that included some real life drama. It was interesting to see how both lead characters in their own way struggled to find themselves. I think we all at some point in our lives have had to find ourselves and discover who we are and what makes us happy.

And now I will join Sandra and Maria in totally recommending that you get this movie and watch it. And to peak your curiosity even more, here is a very brief YOUTUBE trailer with a few clips from the movie!

  1. Kathy, thanks for this review. I just put the movie in my netflix queue - it sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Hope you had a fun Super Bowl Sunday. I'm working on a recap post. I LOVED The Boss' halftime show!

Ronda and Lola...those names sound so wonderful, both of them!

I talked to some people at the party last night who have FOUR cats...they were telling me that two is not enough. Yikes! No way am I getting a third cat until little Maria grows up (and calms down a little bit).

Great post and thanks again for the recommendation!

  2. Hi Annie, you will totally love watching Kinky Boots too!

I had a fun Superbowl Sunday! A little too much I think as I woke up pretty late this morning. Lucky for me I have the day off! I hope you stayed warm at your party with the bon fire!

I totally loved the half time show. After last year's boring show with Tom Petty I was so glad that they got Bruce this year because he always does a great performance just like you know who!

That's interesting that those people you talked to last night have four cats and that they considered two not enough! Yikes is right! I'm still working on my confidence with just one kitty.

BTW, I'm going to try to see if I can get over to the other agency this Saturday.

Hope you enjoy Kinky Boots! I just love that title too!:) Have a great evening Annie. While I'm off today I'm going to stockpile maybe two more entries!

  3. Hey, btw - do you have kitties in mind? I have a friend on the east coast that fosters them (if we could get them to you...)

  4. Hi Kim, that is really cool that your friend fosters kittens and very kind for you to mention it to me and offer to get them to me. I don't have any specific kittens in mind although I did see two pairs that I really liked at an adoption agency near my house, but the foster parents sort of discouraged me a little on those specific pairs so I'm still looking. I found another agency and continue to be very hopeful that I will find a little Ronda and maybe Lola soon. I'm going to keep trying.

I'm so impressed with the commitment and care that pet foster parents have. Great dedication. I really appreciate your offer to help and will definitely keep your friend in mind. Very kind of you. Thank you so much.

    Have a great evening Kim!

  5. I know I have said this before, but I do need to join Netflix. I just never seem to have time to watch movies lately. Kinky Boots will be in the list for sure once I do join. Thanks for writing this great review.

  6. Hi Girasoli, I think you would love Kinky Boots too! It won an award at Sundance so you might even be able to find it at the video store if you haven't joined Netflix yet. It's a great movie to keep in mind when you have some time to watch it.

    Have a great day!

  7. HI Kathy, glad to hear that you are going to check out the other agency too. I wonder if those people discouraged you about the younger kittens because they were hoping you would take some older cats? I've heard that it's easier to find homes for the babies. Just speculation though.

Keep your confidence up though because the truth is that cats are not that hard to take care of! Definitely easier than dogs!

  10. Hi Annie, yes I’m looking forward to checking out that other agency too. The agency person did say that most people want the little kittens because they are so small and cute. I think I would definitely be better with cats rather than dogs because I agree that they will be eaiser to care for and yet I think they are also so playful and affectionate in their own way too. I can't wait!

Thanks so much for the pep talk Annie! I will definitely stay confident and encouraged.

  12. Hi Anne, glad you enjoyed the review. Your daughter (just like Sandra and Maria) has excellent taste in movies. You will totally enjoy watching Kinky Boots. And I didn't even bring up that "other" movie! :) (well almost didn't!).

This movie recieved an award from Sundance so there's a chance you will find it at your local video store. Hope you can find it and if you do you will really love it too! Enjoy! And thanks so much for your kitty comments! :)

  13. Kathy, I don't know how I missed the post before. But I'm glad to hear that you loved Kinky Boots! I thought it was so much fun -- the music, the costumes....the great runway scene in Milano is a classic.

I actually broke down and bought the DVD and the CD soundtrack recently. Now, I'm singing "Whatever Sandra wants....."

  14. Hi Sandra, yes I totally love that movie. I think I'm going to buy the DVD and soundtrack too. I've already seen it twice and will see it for the 3rd time sometime this weekend!

I love your rendition of the song! Whatever Sandra wants, I'm sure she'll get . . . :)
