Saturday's PhotoHunting: Wrapped

Since before the 1900's baby carriers (wrap/sling) have been used by mothers all over the world. In Peru the Quechua (indigenous) people wrap their babies in what they call a "Manta" which is basically an almost square piece of cloth that sits over both shoulders like a cape.

While visiting the popular Sunday Market in Pisac, Peru I spotted this little cutie eating a piece of water melon and just had to ask her mom if I could snap her picture. She was kind to say yes. :)

In most of the towns you will also see some of the young children dressed up in traditional Quechua clothing with baby llamas wrapped in a manta offering to pose for a photo.  After taking their photos it is customary to give them a little tip. These two girls were so cute, one had a baby llama and the other a puppy.

But babies, llamas and puppies aren't the only things that are wrapped in these mantas, many of the local women use them to wrap their haul of vegetables, fruit and other products purchased at the markets. I took this photo at another very popular Sunday Market in the town of Chinchero.

I loved the people of Peru.  They are always friendly and seem to be such hard workers.  I mean I can't even imagine not having my grocery store wagon to push around with my haul of food.

  1. Hi Kathy --

There are places I've visited where I've loved the sights I saw there but the people less. It's so much of a pleasure for one to come away from a place with good memories of people as well as its monuments, museums, etc.

    1. Hi YTSL, I've been very fortunate to have had very pleasant experiences with the people I've met in my travels. Sometimes they have been more memorable than the sights.

      Have a wonderful weekend.

  2. The manta is similar to the traditional baby carrier used in my country too. I have never thought of using the traditional baby carrier to carry my groceries. :)

Gattina, oops is that a goat. I thought it was a llama. :)

Sue, I enjoyed watching the locals go about their daily routines. I enjoyed my time at the market so much that I went back a second time.

    1. Hi Girasoli, thanks so much for your comments and for liking my photos. I love taking pictures of people and the people in Peru are so friendly, they didn't mind. Anytime I asked for their permission they were very nice. The market was the best place for candids which is what I like to take more of. People going about their day naturally.

I actually didn't get to blog that much while in Peru. I think I may have done only 3 or 4 the fewest ever. It's because although there was free wifi, it was so slow I couldn't upload my photos. I tried to journal even though I couldn't blog just so I wouldn't forget my thoughts while I had them. Thank you for following me and no worries about commenting. I appreciate your time to read about my travels and that you enjoyed reading and it's totally okay if you don't comment.

Thanks again. Have a great week.
