American Idol Season 11: It's Girls Night . . .

It's the girls turn to take center stage and perform a song of their choice for America's votes.  How will they do after some of the strong performances of last night's show with the boys.

Well, here's how it went:

Chelsea Sorrell  starts things off with Carrie Underwood's Cowboy Casanova. I thought she did a good job, but will it be good enough to move on in the competition.

Erika Van Pelt sings Heart's What About Love and I enjoyed it.  She did look very comfortable and confident during her performance.

Jen Hirsh sings Adele's One and Only.  I love Adele and it's hard to live up to her. I think she did pretty good, but it wasn't perfect. She did have some strong moments but it got a little shaky at the end.

It was interesting that Randy admitted to Ryan that they were a little too lenient on the boys last night.  So tonight, they have been a lot more critical of the girls.  They are doing the right thing by keeping it more real in the competition, but is it really fair to the girls that they are being more critical now when they gave some of the boys a "free pass". Probably not, but when I really think about it, their free passes last night could hurt the boys outcome more.

Brielle Von Hugel sings Otis Redding's (Sittin' on The) Dock of the Bay and I thought she was really good.  A great song choice for her too.

Hallie Day sings Nina Simone's version of Feeling Good and she did great.  I've been a fan of hers since the auditions and I would love to see more of her in the competition.

Skylar Laine sings Faces' classic Stay With Me. I loved the energy and personality that she brought to the stage. Excellent!

Baylie Brown sings Lonestar's Amazed and I would have to agree with the judges that it wasn't her best performance.

Hollie Cavanagh sings Christina Aguilera's Reflection.  I thought she did a pretty good job.

Hayley Johnsen sings Eurythmics Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). Although she had great presence on stage, I didn't really like her interpretation of the song or her singing performance.

Shannon Magrane, sings Kathy Troccoli's Go Light Your World and I thought she did a really good job.  I hope that it is enough to keep her in the competition.

Jessica Sanchez sings Jennifer Hudson's Love You I Do and all I can say is Wow! She is definitely the whole package.  Great vocals, wonderful stage presence, and a cool personality  . . . and she's only 16 years old.

Elise Testone sings Adele's One and Only.  Now that's how you sing an Adele song.  I loved her performance.

Overall, I thought the girls did a wonderful job.  I was a little worried at the beginning of the show but they got stronger toward the end.

Here are my favorite girl performances of the night:  Jessica Sanchez, Elise Testone, Brielle Von Hugel, Skylar Laine, Hallie Day, Hollie Cavanagh and Shannon Magrane

And that's my Recap. Keep on Rocking AI . . .

  1. Hi Kathy, thanks for the recap. I was able to watch last night and while I was impressed overall, I did think that some of the song choices weren't that great. Some of those girls chose these sleepy ballads which probably isn't the best choice at this point. My two faves were Jessica and Hallie Day (love that soul torch singer thing).

I'm also not sure that it's such a good idea to be covering Adelle! Surprised that two of them sang the same song - don't think I've ever seen that happen.

    Anyway, enjoy the results show!

  2. Hi Annie, you are right most of them did choose sleepy ballads. Jessica is definitely my favorite too and so is Hallie. I hope that they both make it to the next round. I really like Elise and Skylar too.

That's a good point, about two contestants who sang the same song. I thought Elise did a better job with it but the Judges still said they liked Jen.

As usual I'll probably get the results off the East Coast Feeds and then watch the results show. I just get too stressed out watching it live because they just overly draw it out way too much. I'd rather that just find out the results in 5 minutes vesus 1 hour. :)

Thanks so much for your recap too Annie. Have a great day.

  3. I'm with you both with Jessica, Hallie, Skylar and Jen Hirsh, and Elise. I thought last night really brought home what they judges say "song choice is important". Unfortunately, I think that might sink some of them. They are all a talented group but I had Baylie, Chelsea Sorell and Hayley in the bottom. I guess the one good thing is that whoever has to leave will have had national exposure. I hope it helps them pursue their dream. Can't wait for the results!

I know I said it before, and I'll say it again. Steven Tyler's constructive comments amaze me each time. I don't think I ever gave him credit for being able to articulate his musical gift....

Makes me want to ask: WHO WERE THE JUDGES BEFORE?

K: Thanks for the recap! M

  6. LOL at M's comment: who were the judges before? It's true. I've forgotten all about Simon and the cult of personality that made the show more about him than the contestants.

I too think that Steven Tyler can be very insightful. Sometimes I think he is scrambling to find something nice to say though. He's just not going to be mean!

Kathy, you've got the West Coast advantage; I would do the same thing (find out what happened and then watch). I wish I could do that with some of the Tar Heel basketball games. LOL.

  7. Hi Girls, thanks so much for your comments and recaps....

M, :) I get excited too. No worries on the double post. I would try to delete one of them but I'm afraid that I'll somehow delete both if I try. :)

You are right about how song choice is so important at this stage of the competition. I totally agree about Steven. He really seems to put a lot of thought into what he says.

I do think it is a great accomplishment for these 24 contestants. Top 24 is something to be very proud of and should help them further their careers.

Annie, :) You are right, in the X-Factor I think they focus too much on the judges. I really had my reservations about Steven but he has turned out to be a really cool addition. And he is such a softee under that hard rocker personality. Yes, the West Coast has it's advantages at times. :) Hey, good luck to your Tar Heels...I still remember that championship run that they had. It was fun following along with their run for the NCAA title. I hope they do it again!

Well girls I just checked out the top 13 and although I'm bummed that Hallie Day and Creighton Fraker didn't make it, I think overall it is a very well chosen top 13 based upon their performances.

I'm looking forward to next week's performances. Whoo Hoo!

  9. I think it's a good Top 13 too. Though I wish Hallie Day was in there instead of the tall girl (forget her name). But overall, I think we have a lot to look forward to from this crew.

So I had a revelation last night...Jimmy Iovine is the new Simon! Some of his comments last night were very blunt but at least they are recorded and the contestants don't have to stand in front to listen like they did with Simon!

    Have a great weekend!

  10. Hi Annie, :)...yes Jimmy was on fire with his comments. Some of what he said was true, but like Jennifer and you say it was more the way he said it, blunt and to the point. It must be so hard to hear such critique and still keep their composure. Like you said luckily it was a recording only.

I'm looking forward to next week's performances. I may have to start recording them now. :)

Have a great weekend too. I actually have Monday off too, so I'm extra happy. :)
