American Idol: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Week

It's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame week and all the Idols did an awesome job tonight.   I thought that will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas provided the Idols with great advice.

Jacob Lusk sings Man in the Mirror and was fantastic. I think it was the right song choice for him.

Haley Reinhart sings Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart and I thought she did great. I'm not a huge fan of Janis Joplin, but I did enjoy Haley's edgy performance.

Casey Abrams sings Have You Ever Seen the Rain and I totally loved it!

Lauren Alaina sings Natural Woman by the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin.  I thought she did a great job.

James Durbin slows his hard rock momentum with While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles.   The judges loved it, but I thought it wasn't one of his best vocal performance.  I did, however, appreciate the passion and emotions he put into his performance.

Scotty McCreery sings That's Alright Mama, a song made famous by his childhood idol, Elvis Presley.  Steven is right, Scotty is not "All Hat and no Cattle"!  Probably the most entertaining performance by him in the competition.  I thought having the girls rush the stage at the end was very cute.   :)

Pia Toscano sings River Deep, Mountain High and wow!  Who knew that she could sing a Tina Turner song with such rock and roll vigor.  :)  I thought she nailed it!

Stefano Langone sings When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge and I thought he did so much better this week than last.

Paul McDonald sings Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash.  Now I've been a big fan of Paul during the competition but for some reason as compared to the other contestants, I honestly didn't like it as much as the judges did.

All the Idols did an awesome job tonight and here's how I rated the performances:  Good luck Idols.

Pia Toscano
Casey Abrams
Scotty McCreery
Lauren Alaina
Stefano Langone
Jacob Lusk
Haely Reinhart
Paul McDonald
James Durbin

And that's my Recap. Keep on Rocking AI . . .

  1. Great recap Kathy. It was a very entertaining night and I have no idea who will go home. I think my favorite performance was Casey - I like that CCR song and I also like when he plays his bass. Loved Jacob's song choice too. Scotty looked like he was having fun!

No offense to Gwen Stefani but I thought some of the outfits were bad. :)

And wasn't it funny the way Ryan was dancing and being crazy at the end?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what happens tonight. Thanks for the recap.

  2. Thanks for the recap, K! I agree it's getting more difficult each week and it seems to come down to who had an 'off' night. I agree with you about Casey, a very talented and entertaining musician and artist. And if Pia doesn't always nail it, I'll feel sorry for her because I think there is a tremendously high expectation for her. I have to say, though, that James and Jacob presented very emotionally charged and professional performances for me. This is why I love this show. So many times people have differing opinions! I absolutely love the whole quirky aura of Haley and thought she reincarnated JJ there a few times. No so much Lauren for me last night - too bad too. This is fun. Can't wait until tonight.

  3. Hi Girls, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and comments on the Idol performances . . .

Annie, I have no idea who will going home either. LOL on the Stefani comment. I thought her fashion line was horrible too. Yikes. Hopefully the fans were able to move past what they were wearing and listened to their vocals. I loved the songs that both Casey (love the standup bass too) & Jacob selected and I agree, Scotty was having a great time on stage. Loved that they had the girls rush the stage and loved that they didn't tell him they were going to do that. He really handled himself pretty well. :)

M, at this stage and especially this year with all the contestants being so good it is going to be difficult to see each contestant leave. I also think it is very fun to read all of our different opinions. I really like James and yet didn't really care for his performance but do admire how he gave it his all. Haley is such an interesting artist and you are right she did a great job with JJ's song and rock style. I like her and wouldn't mind seeing more of her.

Well, I think I'm going to sneak a peek and the results and not wait for it to air on the west coast. :)

Thanks again girls for your take on last night's performances. Enjoy the results show.

  4. Hi again, wow I just took a peek and read that Pia got eliminated. I'm so bummed. I thought she was for sure going to be in the top 5. It's sad to see her go but I think she's super talented and will go on to have a great career. Maybe a future non winning Idol Oscar winner ....

    Can't wait for next week!

  5. Shocker! I think Pia's exposure to the music industry will move her career forward. She has an exceptionally well-toned voice. I guess she may not have 'connected' with the viewers as much as the others. After seeing the non-winner, superstar Jennifer Hudson on Idol this season -- anything can happen! I agree with the G. Stefani couture too! Have a great (sunny) weekend!

  6. What a shocker! The judges were just as stunned as everyone else. 5 girls in a row eliminated and so inexplicable since Pia was the best of the 3 remaining girls, by far!

The judges would have definitely saved her if they still had the save. You are right, she will probably go on to a fine career.

    Have a good weekend!

  7. Hi Girls, a "shocker" elimination is so right. I don't think anyone saw it coming. And I feel so bad for her because just when she decided to do an up tempo song she gets eliminated.

M, I also think that Pia with the show's exposure and her likeability will really take her forward too. I was really surprised that she didn't get the votes because she seemed to have been the judges favorite and fan favorites not having been in the bottom before her elimination. And yes, Jennifer is a great example of how she can be successful even without winning Idol. Gwen is lucky that the girls she dressed, looks great in practically anything.

Annie, I hadn't realized that there were 5 girls eliminated in a row. Hope at least Lauren or Haley makes it to top 5 otherwise we're going to have an all guys top 5 and although they all deserve to be there I think at least one of the top girls (most specifically Pia), also deserves to be there. I totally agree with you. I think for sure that the judges would have used it on Pia too. It's too bad the fans put Casey in the bottom which he shouldn't have been thereby taking away their only save. Maybe they need to give two saves next year.

I have to confess that I couldn't watch the results show last night because I know me. I would've been in tears watching Pia sing her goodbye song. You know I have never been to an Idol Summer Tour concert before but with this wonderful group of Top 11 Idols, I think it would be worth going. I have to figure out who I'll have to drag with me though. :)

Thanks so much girls for your comments and sharing. Should be another interesting show next week. I can't wait.

    Have a great weekend too!

  8. You might have already seen it but the guy who writes "Idol Chatter" has an interesting article about why Pia was eliminated, and he even connects it to the fact that Simon is gone and the new judges are so much nicer! LOL. Not sure I agree with everything he said, but it was thought provoking to read.

Also,Scotty mania continues to grow here in NC. I saw in the paper this week that they have already started having these big public viewing parties in his home town, with thousands of people coming.

Scotty reminds me of Opie (from the Andy Griffith Show)...another North Carolina connection, ha ha. Both of them are All-American boys.

    Have a good weekend~!

  9. Hi Annie, thanks for tipping me to Idol Chatter's article. I just read it and like you I think it was very thought provoking. I'm not sure too that without Simon and the judges being nicer was that big of a factor. I think there's too many factors to really say what caused her elimination. But like Pia said in an interview, some things were maybe meant to be. Who knows, she can become the darling in the unjustly eliminated too early Idol club and can actually get more positive exposure for herself, than had she kept going....life can be very interesting sometimes. I wish her the best because I think she is very talented.

That is so cool that Scotty mania is growing. He does remind me of Opie too. :) I think he can be a recording artist right now and with his Nice Guy appeal he will be a smash hit on the concert circuit. He is definitely representing your home state of North Carolina very well! I'm very tempted to see this group on the idol summer tour, I like them so much. :)

Thanks so much for mentioning the article and like the guy says, it should be very interesting next week, especially for the remaining girls.

    Have a great weekend too!
