American Idol: Songs From the Year they were born . . .

Tonight, Idol announced that a portion of the proceeds coming from Idol song downloads will be going  toward helping the relief effort in Japan, through the American Red Cross.  Anyone else interested in donating directly to Red Cross to help, can do so HERE

Tonight, the Idols are asked to sing a song from the Year that they were born.  Before each Idol took the stage they showed a brief interview clip of their parents sharing some great stories about their childhood.  :) Another cool addition to this season's Idol show.

Here's how the live performances went:

Naima Adedapo sings What's Love Got to Do With It by the amazing Tina Turner.  JLO was probably the most critical that she has been this season and I kind of agree.  I still love Naima's personality and what she brings to the Idol stage so I'm hoping that she gets enough votes to move on.

Paul McDonald sings I guess That's Why they Call It the Blues by the great Elton John.  Even with a cold, I thought he did great.  I loved it and will be downloading it, sending some love to Japan.

Thia Megia sings Colors of the Wind by Vanessa Williams.  The vocals were just Okay?? Randy, dude!  I thought she did great. It's a safe song for her, yes, but to her credit it was a very well performed safe song.  And how sweet that she stuck up for her former vocal coach "from hell" saying that the scenes with her giving them hugs weren't aired.

James Durbin sings I'll Be There for You by Bon Jovi.  I loved learning from his mom how this rocker used to sing and play with his doll when he was a little tike!  So cute.  I agreed with Randy that he was a little pitchy but even with that he has such a presence on stage I was very entertained and enjoyed his performance a lot. Btw, the secrete is out and it looks like we'll be treated to a live performance from Aerosmith this season.  :)

Haley Reinhart sings I'm Your Baby Tonight by Whitney Houston.  I haven't been a really big fan of Haley and this wasn't her best performance, but I still enjoyed it.  She is the only Idol so far that has really varied her choice in music style and song choice and unlike Randy I'm beginning to appreciate it.  But I also agree with Steven that it would be cool to hear her bluesy, R&B, soulful style  again.  I'm hoping she gets the votes to stay so we can see more of her.

Stefano Langone sings If You Don't Know Me by Now by Simply Red.  Outstanding!  One of my favorite songs and he sang it perfectly.  More love to Japan . . . .downloading this song too.

Pia Toscano sings another Whitney Houston song, Where Do Broken Hearts Go.  She changed it up this week with a more up beat song and I loved it! I'm sure that her Grandfather is looking down on her and is very proud of her.

Scotty McCreery sings Can I Trust You With My Heart by Travi Tritt and "Baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low" Scotty McCreery who clearly got his musical talent from his parents, nailed his performance.  IMHO, definitely top 5 material.

Karen Rodriguez sings Love Will Lead You Back by Taylor Dayne.  I was a bit distracted by her big hair, but enjoyed her performance much better than last week.  I thought this was her best performance in the competition.

Casey Abrams sings Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.  For the first time in the competition, I didn't really like Casey's performance.  Maybe it was more the song choice than his vocals.

Lauren Aliana sings I'm the Only One by Melissa Etheridge and I thought she did a great job.  I'm a big fan of Melissa and this is one of my favorite songs.  Big improvement from last week's performance.  More love to Japan.

Jacob Lusk sings Alone by Heart. I totally loved that Jacob picked a rock song for a change.  And I have to agree with JLO, that he really gives 110% of himself to each song and each performance.  Excellent!  And I thought his mom did pretty good. :)  Thanks to Jacob and Heart, sending more love to Japan.

And here's how I would rate their performances:

Stefano Langone
Scotty McCreery
Jacob Lusk
Pia Toscana
Lauren Aliana
Paul McDonald
Thia Megia
James Durbin
Karen Rodriguez
Haley Reinhart
Casey Abrams
Naime Adedapo

This is going to be a really difficult elimination, because all of the remaining contestants are so talented and I really like all of them.  Good luck Idols.

Many thanks again to AI and the Idols for singing their hearts out and showing the people of Japan some love!

And that's my Recap. Keep on Rocking AI . . .

  1. Great recap! It was an interesting show with some very good performances. I still think Jacob is my fave. I was cracking up at those childhood photos of Scotty dressed up like Elvis! His parents singing was funny too.

I'm guessing that Haley will go home; her performance wasn't very memorable and it wasn't a great song choice. Have a good day!

  2. Hi Annie, thanks so much for your comments. Yes, the stories of Scotty dressed up as and idolizing Elvis was very cute. :) I just think he is so talented and he sings with such ease. Reminds me of how Clay was. So consistent. I also like Jacob a lot too. And I'd have to agree with you. I think Haely could very well go home. The bottome three could be Naima, Haley and maybe Karen...it's definitely getting harder.

Have a great day too, Happy St. Patrick's Day. :)

  3. Thanks for the recap, K! Lovin' to see what you and Annie thought about the show!

I'm not one to shy away from dissension. I have to say I was a little bored by last night's show. It might be the advertising breaks - not sure. Felt the judges were more animated and more forthcoming with constructive comments but not sure what it was. I wish Haley would pick the right songs--bluesy, yes! While I enjoy the uniqueness of Naima, I don't quite see her at the same level of singing as some of the others. I did like Scotty initially and I'm a big fan of country but I find he is getting a little boring too. He does have a great voice but seems -to me at least - to be a little karaoke at times. I'm thinking based on last night's result, the best vocally were Tia (altho not liking her selection), Paul (even with his hoarseness - love his tone), Stefano (may be the frontrunner), Pia. Unfortunately, I thought Jacob was just 'ok' last night. And although I love the idea that Karen brings a different 'flavor' to the show, I was also distracted by her hair and truthfully can't remember how she actually did! Hope it doesn't sound too harsh. Anyway, I am curious to see tonight's results! Rock on, as K would say.

  4. Hi M, not being shy to speak your mind is a great quality to have. :)

Wasn't poor Karen's hair super distracting. It was almost better for me to concentrate on listening to her during the wide shots. Hopefully, someone will point that out to her for hopefully her next performance. It is good that the judges are giving more critique because they need to hear it so they can improve. I think Naima could be in danger of being eliminated. I'm not sure why, but I really like her personality, but do agree that her vocals aren't as strong as the other top contestants. I enjoy reading everyone's take on the performances. Always gives me food for thought. I agree with your top choices, but for me I would include Scotty and Jacob:) he, he

Thanks so much Annie & M. I really love reading your take and thoughts on the performances. Makes it more fun for me. :)

Have a great St. Patrick's Day!

  5. Oh my gosh thank you for your recaps of the show. I normally have class on Wed. nights but last night it was cancelled and I was in heaven watching the show. I have really enjoyed the panel of judges and I don't miss the ones that left. This years group of singers is so captivating. I am loving this show. Wish I could see it every wed. so please keep the recaps coming for people who can't see it like me.

  6. Hi Barb, that's great that you were able to watch Wednesday night's show and that you enjoyed it. I enjoyed it too. The contestants this year are entertaining and pretty diverse and it's great to hear the different styles. I was a little worried at the start of the season how the panel of judges would go over without Simon, but the transition has been better than I had expected and although I miss the guess mentors a bit, I do like that they have the group of professional producers working to help the Idols this year.

Thanks so much for your comments and for liking my recap. Feel free to stop by anytime when your class isn't cancelled. :) Have a great Friday and Weekend.

  7. I agree with Barb that I don't miss the old judges either - I'm really enjoying this new crowd.

I was a little surprised that Karen was the one who went home. She looked so much nicer last night without the crazy hair and she also sounded much better than she did the night before. But still, I think it was the right decision to not use the save.

    Have a great weekend!

  8. Hi Annie, thanks for your report on last night. I missed it because I wanted to take a gym class instead, plus I kind of get too stressed watching the elimination shows. Now, I'm sorry that I didn't set my DVD recorder to record the show before I left. I would've loved to have seen her perform her song especially now learning from you that she did really well. I think that they want to save their save for probably someone like Stefano, Casey, Paul, Pia, James and Scotty if they are to not have enough votes to get to top 5. So like you I agree with them not using the save.

Thank you so much for your recap of last night. Have an awesome weekend too! :)
