Sound of Sunshine . . .

A little excerpt from a recent phone conversation . . .

Friend: Kathy, be at my house @ 10:45 on Sunday. It's my turn to drive and we're meeting them @ 11:20.

Me: Sounds good . . . see you then.

Me: Calling friend back . . . so what are we doing on Sunday again? Are we hiking? what . . .

Friend: LOL! LOL! LOL! Kathy we're meeting Rachel & Yoli for lunch!

Me: Oh, okay. LOL! Bye . . .

I've been so buried in my passions and dreams (aka "trip planning stuff") that I forgot about my friends! Lucky for me they have a great sense of humor and a forgiving heart. Whew! They totally rock!  See you girls this Sunday . . .

And from my blogging friend's blog (Anne, Let us go then you and I) . . . she shared this gem recently and I've been listening to it everyday since. A good reminder to enjoy the sunshine in our lives.

PhotoHunt: Natural

The cool waters of a Natural Waterfall . . .

There are many types of natural waterfalls:  cascade, block, plunge, fan, horsetail and punchbowl.  Since it was October when I took this photo, I think this would be considered a baby plunge waterfall.  :)  Natural waterfalls are majestic, thunderous, very beautiful and I love seeing them.

And if you really love waterfalls, you have to check out the amazing  collection that are listed on this cool blog by Flexi Journey: "55 Magnificent Natural Waterfalls in the World".  I really need to put some of these places on my "must see list"!  Iguazu Falls is brilliant!  You know, I've always wanted to travel to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru.

American Idol: The Dawg, the Rocker and J-Lo . . .

I kind of like it!  Season 10 may just be worth watching.

Travel Technology: My New I-Touch . . .

I promised my fellow tweeters (and blogging friends) MartaR and Girasoli that I would give a full review of my new I-touch (Apple Website). Now that I've had a few days to play with it, here's what I have to say . . .

Camera (Still & HD Video):  I absolutely love that the new touch now has a front/back facing camera to take still and video shots. I think this will come in handy for those really interesting shots that you would not normally take with a regular camera.

Voice Recorder:  I love that there is a voice recorder on the new generation. It's a great feature that will allow me to record certain names, restaurants, general information that you want to remember and which you don't have time to type or write down.  I used to take my other ipod with voice recorder attachment with me but now I can leave that at home.

One of the new things I'm doing this year is to create Audio notes on my iTouch.  I will record quick audio clips which can provide interesting facts and background information about my sightseeing interests. This will allow me to really focus on what I'm seeing rather than having to read my notes.  I'll still save all of my notes to review at night or during breaks in between my sightseeing for more details.

Here's an example of an audio clips I've done already which I saved to my i-Tunes play list (along with a few others) for Amsterdam sights near Dam Square. The only challenge I've had so far is pronouncing these Dutch names and trying not to sound like the typical boring podcast narrator.  Unfortunately, I'm failing at the moment on both counts but I'll hopefully improve as I practice. I'd better, otherwise I might bore myself.  I am adding music to help . . . Ha ha

Retina Display:  With the new display the images, text and movies looks sharper and crisp.  This makes watching movies on the smaller screen better.  I loaded one of my TV shows on there and it is so clear. Perfect for use on those long airplane rides or long waits in train stations.

Size:  Love the slim, sleek look.  With more features it's so amazing that it is even smaller than my old 1rst generation touch.  I really considered getting the iPad, because let's face it the bigger screen is much easier to read than the smaller i-Touch screen.  However, for someone like me who carries a big digital SLR camera, it was important to stick with something that was more compact and lighter to carry around.

Here's a summary of the features that you'll find helpful:

Entertainment: With the iPod/gaming feature, you have the perfect entertainment companion. You can listen to music, watch videos, play games, read notes, record voice memos, take photos, take videos and all at the touch and flick of your fingers.

Utility: With the many built in features and a few applications that you can either download for free or for a minimal fee (.99 cents to $4.99), you will have a device that can tell time, give you weather reports, wake you up, keep your calendar, alert you to appointments, tell you how much to tip, manage your ATM debit card balances, keep loads of contact information in the form of notes, addresses, phone numbers, photos, etc. There's even a Flashlight application that can help you find your way home!  I swear this thing does everyone you want it to do with the exception of pouring you a cup of coffee in the morning.

Travel Uses: This is the perfect companion for traveling. With the right Applications, you will be able to look up words in other other languages (i-Translate),  find the nearest restaurant/sightseeing attraction (Yelp), review notes and maps of all the attractions, history, artwork and more (Airsharing) and check-in at the airport (Kayak.com).  With applications like Convert and Currency, I can easily turn meters to miles to know how far things are distance wise and I can convert world currencies to US Dollars so I know how much things cost and how much I’m spending.

Airsharing: I loaded my airsharing application which I first learned about from my favorite Travel Website, Slow Talk. This application allows you to load all of your important travel documents such as copies of your passport, your ID, airline tickets, train tickets/schedules, lodging confirmations, directions, your itinerary, lists of restaurants, lists of food items, etc. You will need Internet connection to load your documents from your computer, but once they are loaded you do not need Internet connection to refer to the documents. No more xeroxing pages of notes only to be thrown away during the trip.

The practical uses are amazing. I remember last year when I was in Scotland, I happen to be in the area of the train station and I thought that I should just see if I can pick up my tickets. I didn’t have the hard copy of the confirmation with me at the time but had it on my I-touch. I showed it to the ticket guy and he looked it up on the computer and voila he issued me my ticket. Last year, I loaded maps of the Isle of Skye on my I-touch and used it to refer to directions (of course only when I was pulled on the side of the road or at a stop). :)

If you are considering either upgrading or looking to buy one for the first time I would totally recommend this new 4th generation itouch.  It is a great investment.

PhotoHunt: School

The first class I ever failed at . . .

. . . was in snowboarding school!  That's my sis pointing her way down the hill as our instructor told us to do.  She did pretty good for her first time ever on snow.  But after several finger pointing, heal-toe turns and really hard tumbles, my sis and I decided to call it a day and head back to the lodge for a cup of delicious hot cocoa.

We unbuckled our snow boots, sat on our boards and snow sledded down the bunny hill.  Now, that was fun!  :)

Amsterdam: My canal . . .

Now that I have purchased my tickets, I've decided to start posting about my proposed itinerary. This is something I learned to do from blogging friend and fellow Slow Traveler, Sandra. I think it keeps me focused and helps to prepare me for my trip. Plus it's fun. I'm going to still continue to post on my logistics blog because with WiFi's available in both my home base apartments, I think it will come in handy to have the links to refer back to while on the road. The joys of technology. :)

Over the weekend, I decided to check out where the apartment I rented is located using Street View on Google Maps. I remember reading about this feature by reading a thread posted on ST by blogging friend and another fellow slow traveler, Marta. She's also a moderator for Slow Talk. The apartment's description said that it is located in a nice neighborhood with a beautiful canal in front. Well, I had no idea how really cool it looks, until I found it on Street View. Very cool!

It seems pretty close to a few places that I will be visiting like the Rijksmuseum, which was highly recommended by blogging friend and fellow Slow Traveler, AnnieNC. I rented Sister Wendy's Grand European Tour for the 4th time in preparation for my museum visits in Amsterdam. I heard of Sister Wendy from AnnieNC's blog and have learned a lot about art by watching her DVD's. Thanks so much again Annie. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museums are both high on my must see list.

I can't wait! I think the next two months will fly by so I plan to start preparing now and not wait until the week before I leave like I did last year. :) More to come . . .

PhotoHunt: Anniversary

An Anniversary can be a day of celebration or remembrance.

I snapped this photo somewhere between Hermosa and Manhattan Beach during our 4th of July celebration. The stars are positioned using candles and were lit up at night.

PhotoHunt: Hot

Something really Hot from Venice, Italy . . .
I took this photo while on a tour of this Venetian Glass making shop in Venice, Italy. It was really amazing to watch this craftsman create and shape a beautiful Venetian glass from this red hot ball of silica. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about to process of making Venetian Glass . . .

The glass is made from silica which becomes liquid at high temperatures. As the glass passes from a liquid to a solid state, there is an interval when the glass is soft before it hardens completely. This is when the glass-master can shape the material.
The process was really fun and interesting to watch and the end results are very beautiful.

Have a wonderful long Holiday weekend everyone.

Trekcapri's 2010 Vibrant Europe Adventures . . .

Well, I finally did it and purchased my airfare tickets which makes it official. In a nutshell, I've decided to head to Amsterdam (Netherlands), Bruges (Belgium) and Berlin (Germany). It's another late fall (November) trip so I have just a little over two months to get all the trip planning done. I'm actually staying in an apartment in both my home bases of Amsterdam and Berlin with a brief two night hotel stay in Bruges. I really didn't think I could pull it off with it having been so busy and difficult at work. But I have a very kind supervisor and he encouraged me to go on the trip and even take three weeks (I was originally only going for two). And truth be told, I'm happy I'm going.

I'm excited about visiting each place for all the unique qualities and unbelievable history (good and bad) that I'm going to learn about. I never would have dreamed that I would actually stay in an apartment in East Berlin Germany. Never, never would have dreamed that was possible and yet here I am. The wall is down and East Berlin has become this thriving community which is heavy on the cool and art factor!

I have many people to thank for the inspiration of this trip, which I'll blog about in future posts. And now, as tradition would have me do, I have given my trip a special nick name and have created my trekcapri trip video! LOL!
