American Idol: The Dawg, the Rocker and J-Lo . . .

I kind of like it!  Season 10 may just be worth watching.

  1. I agree, it will be interesting to see what this team is like. I'm kind of glad that Kara is gone but wish Ellen was doing another season. Steven Tyler was a surprise - I wonder if he is going to take Simon's "blunt" role?

  2. Hi Annie, thanks so much for your comments. I watched the recording of the big press announcement and it was really interesting to hear their responses to questions from the media. You're right about Kara and Ellen. Kara was okay but representing the 4th judge just didn't make it with the viewers I think. It would've been nice to see Ellen in a second season. I was actually hoping that maybe Shania Twain would've been picked but I can understand J-Lo. They're looking to draw an existing audience and she has broad appeal.

I agree that Steven was a surprise and it will be very interesting, especially since AI wants to keep that "all American" image up.He was the least talkative during the press conference, but he did say he spent time in the Betty Ford clinic. oops. I think his choice was influenced by what they hope a Rocker would bring because the audience was seeing Idol as a lame karaoke type show. And it may still turn out that way if all these big changes don't work.

They are totally changing everything. No more themed or solo artist shows but more time periods. They want to use and build upon each idols strong points rather than seeing how they would do in different genres. That's good for the show I think. So far the only person who pulled off going from one genre to the next was Adam. You raised a good point. Someone asked them who was going to take over Simon's "blunt" role and the producers responded in a scripted way in that they didn't expect someone to duplicate Simon but be themselves. But I felt part of the appeal at times was how Simon was so blunt and off the wall with his comments. The producers kept saying they want to focus more on the kids and the talent, which to me is funny to hear them say after they introduced these "big" superstars as judges. We'll see ... :) And then someone asked J-Lo and Steven if they would perform at some point in the show. And Steven sang a little and J-Lo said well yes maybe, Finale or Idol Gives back . . .

And then there's the "X" Factor produced by Simon which should really be interesting so see the comparison.

  3. Thanks for the report Kathy. I didn't see the press conference and only read a brief article in the paper. In a way, I'm surprised they're making so many changes but I guess they feel like they need to go for it after the big ratings drop last season. I don't think AI will be around all that much longer but it will be interesting to see what they do in the meantime. And yes, I'll definitely check out Simon's new show at least once!

  4. Hi Annie, you're very welcome. I think you are totally right. I think AI is on it's last legs, especially if the ratings don't improve this year after all these "improvements" or as Randy put it, the "Remix" season. :)

I'm going to check out the "X" Factor too. The UK version produced Leona Lewis who I really like a lot.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I think AI starts Jan. 15, 2011 or something like that. Have a great evening. Almost the weekend.

  5. Oh great reviews. I missed the PR for these personalities so it's nice to hear that this mix seems interesting --- Somehow I couldn't picture Tyler and J-Lo together on the same stage.

  6. Hi M, I missed the live press conference too because I was at work, but I found the video on the interent that ran the entire PR show.

It's going to be very interesting with this diverse group. I'm so curious to see how hard or how soft they will be with the contestants. There's a lot of other changes AI is making to boost the ratings but only time will tell whether or not it'll work.

Thanks so much for your comments and welcome home M.
