PhotoHunt: Dark

Let the light shine in  . . .

Inspired by fellow Slow Traveler and blogging friend, AnnieNC (Churches in Venice), while in Venice, Italy I visited several of their beautiful Churches.  This is a photo I took in the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (Wikipedia) in Venice, Italy. There are so many beautiful works of art in this church like Giovanni Bellini's, Madonna and Child with SS Nicholas of Bari or Titian's Assumption altarpiece . . .

Visitors are allowed to take photos but with no flash, so many of my photos came out pretty dark.  When I saw this photo while searching for this week's theme, the image reminded me of a beautiful photo taken in the Church of Santo Spirito (Florence, Italy) by fellow Slow Traveler and blogging friend, Menehune (Synchronicity).

Remember to VOTE on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 & make your voice count.

  1. Wonderful photo - perfect for the theme. I love the Frari. And I've already voted early!

OT but did you see Oprah yesterday? It was a Sound of Music reunion for the movie's 45th anniversary. It was really fun to see what all 7 of the people who played the children look like today. Julie Andrews and Chrisopher Plummer were there too. It was great!

    Happy Halloween weekend.

  4. I like the idea of photos being allowed -- albeit without flash. Flash photography can be so disturbing in the dark old churches and cathedrals of Europe -- something I discovered/felt when visiting such in Germany a few months back.

And your flash-less shot is wonderful. :)

  5. Great shot - this is one of my favourite churches in Vanice (although Annie has been to FAR more than I).

    Have a good weekend.

  7. Hi everyone, thanks so much for your comments.

Annie, I really loved the Frari too. I was so amazed at everything. The choir chairs were also cool. That's so great that you already voted. We have a very important vote in California because we have some pretty poor candidates that we don't want to get in.

Annie, thanks sooooo much for telling me about the SOM Reunion on Oprah, I found the clips on YouTube and watched the show. Wow! It is so cool to see all of the children with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and to hear and see some behind the scenes stories. It really brought me back to my trip in 2006 when I took the SOM tour in Salzburg. I love that movie and watch it every year. IMHO, the best every movie (not just musical) ever made. I'm going to watch the whole show again. Thanks so much Annie for letting me know about it. I might have to watch the movie again this weekend. :)

Maya, thanks for liking my photo. I thought the lighting was cool too.

Ewok1993, thanks for stopping by and liking my take. Happy hunting to you too.

Sandra, thanks for liking my photo. I think it is beautiful too. A wonderful church to visit.

YTSL, I like taking photos too when they are allowed. I'm not the best technically with the camera and always have problems with interior photos and low light. I'll be in Berlin Germany in a few weeks and I enjoyed your posts on your trip. Your post visiting the castles in Heidleberg is making me want to attempt a day trip from Berlin to Wernigrode which is near the Haas mountains. It's a 3 hour train ride but I think it would be worth it. fingers crossed on that plan.

Jerry, I really love this church and it is also one of my favorites (the Maria Salute is a sentimental favorite) but the Frari was just amazing. Reading Annie's blog I'm finding out more churches that I know I would love seeing too.

M, thanks for liking my take this week. It reminded me so much of your recent photo. I actually haven't left yet. I leave in a couple of weeks. I'll write a post before I leave and will be blogging while on the road. I love reading what I have to say when I'm on the road. :)

Thanks so much everyone. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  8. That is actually kinda spooky with just the single light on the crucifix. But it is a beautiful alter.

  9. RE: Sound of Music - I don't know if I mentioned this before but I used to work with the actor who played Kurt. He didn't want to really talk much about it and he doesn't act any longer but it was always a fun trivia fact at my former job.

  10. Beautiful. Frari is way up there on my list of favourite churches anywhere! Neat take on the theme, I love the way sun streams into these massive cathedrals. Also love the message of letting the light shine in the darkness.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

  11. Hi Marta, thanks so much for your comments. You know I don't even remember the source. I'm assuming it was the sun shining through one of the small windows up high like the ones behind the altar but can't remember. It is a beautiful altar. Everything in the Frari is so beautiful.

And I don't remember you mentioning that you worked with the actor that played Kurt. That is so cool. In an interview with ABC that I found on YouTube they did say someone was a computer programmer, maybe that was him they were referring to. I always wonder what happens to child actors and it sounds like all the actors that played the children turned out pretty good. (ie. no paris hilton types. :)

Hi Anne, I also love how the light streams into the churches. I was inspired by you and M on the message Let the light shine in . . . awesome!

Thanks so much Marta and Anne for your comments. Have a wonderful Sunday.
