Slow Travel Sunday Small Bites: Shrimp

This is the first week of the exciting and challenging Slow Travel Sunday Small Bites cooking group. This week's ingredient is shrimp and it was selected by Cindy, Baked Alaska.

When preparing for this cooking group, I went and purchased 3 cook books for appetizer dishes and managed to find some really good recipes in them. However, for the first ingredient, I found my recipe on the Internet.

Residents of Sao Paulo call themselves Paulistas and this simple shrimp dish, "Shrimp Paulista", is a regional favorite. ~ Eating Well

Ingredients:
•2 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined
•2 tablespoons lime juice
•1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided
•8 cloves garlic, minced, divided
•1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
•1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper, divided
•2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

Preparation:
1. Place shrimp in a medium nonreactive bowl and toss with lime juice, 1/4 cup cilantro, half the garlic, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper. Cover and let marinate in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp, marinade and remaining garlic; cook until the shrimp are just cooked through, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat; add the remaining 1/4 cup cilantro, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper. Toss to combine.

I thought this recipe was simple and also quite tasty. I used a little more garlic just because I like the flavor and a dash more pepper for an extra kick.

  1. Kathy, this looks and sounds SO good. Some of my favorite flavors: garlic, lime and cilantro. You did good finding this one! And I am very impressed that you bought 3 cookbooks. :)

This San Paolo shrimp is definitely going into my "want to make this" file!

Hope you're having a great holiday weekend.

  2. Hi Annie, thanks for the kind comments. I really liked your recipe too and will definitely make it soon. Yes, I bought those great books and there was a couple of recipes I liked but when I saw this one I thought this would be kind of easy and it sounded good too. I think you might like it.

My crab recipe will be a little more challenging for me with a few more steps and ingredients...I'll try to make that one tomorrow if I can.

I'm having a fun weekend. It's a tad hot but somehow it hasn't bothered me as much. Maybe it's because we have an extra day off! :) Hope you're enjoying your extra long weekend too! Isn't it great not to have to work tomorrow.

    Have a great evening!

  3. I just realized that I used to have a subscription to Eating Well magazine but I didn't know they had a website too. That's great to know!

Sorry it's been hot but glad it's not bothering you. We are having perfect weather here in NC...warm and sunny but not that hot or humid.

I hope to make my crab recipe tomorrow too. I have a pound of crabmeat from Costco in the fridge and have narrowed it down to two recipes. Need to decide!

I am so psyched about having tomorrow off! You have a great Labor Day Monday!

  4. Kathy, I was drooling over your photo when I saw it on the food forum. It looks so good and so easy. I love all the ingredients! I bet it tasted heavenly.

I smiled when I read the part about buying three cookbooks. I almost bought a couple of cookbooks the other day at B&N but had to put them down since my French books were my priority at the time (my textbook was $200, can you believe it?!)

I hope it cools down for you and that you have a fantastic day tomorrow.

  5. Hi Annie, there's another really good website too called Allrecipes.com. My mushroom dish might be this very tasty looking Vegetarian Quesadilla . . . .
    http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Farmers-Market-Vegetarian-Quesadillas/Detail.aspx

You should check it out, that have wonderful easy recipes!

    I'm glad that your weather is perfect! Enjoy . . . .

I went to costco to look for Homer's Odyssey but couldn't find it. But I do have another close by Costco which I'll go visit to see if it is there. I also tried to get some crab but couldn't find any so I'll go today and get them at TJ's and hopefully my other ingredients. That's funny, I have two choices too, but I'm leaning towards one because shame on me, it looks eaiser. :) They both look like they would taste good. It's going to be a last minute decision! :)

Have an awesome Labor Day off today!

Hi Maria, thanks so much for your kind comments. I was drooling over your photo too. This is really going to be a fun cooking group.

Ouch $200.00! But it's all going to be so worth it when you are able to start speaking French. That would be wonderful when you're finished if you and your husband can plan a trip to France! That would be a very cool trip.

It has luckily cooled a bit which will make today even more fun. I just love the feeling of having a day off just to do nothing, or something, or enjoy cooking a new recipe for SSB! :) Enjoy your Labor Day off today!

Thanks again Annie & Maria! I'm so glad I joined SSB! Enjoy your day today!

  13. Hi Kathy, thanks for the link and the tip about All Recipes. That quesadilla looks great. And I can relate completely to picking the easier recipe. :)

I hope you can find Homer's Odyssey because I think you'll love it. And enjoy the rest of your long weekend!

  14. Hi everyone, glad you liked my recipe.

Barb, thanks for your comments. That website is pretty nice. I think some items requires subscription, but for most of their recipes you can view them and they are pretty good. I like when they have photos with their recipes and I find that I select those items more.

Girasoli, thanks for your comments. Glad you liked the photo. The recipe is very easy and it is pretty tasty. And about the 3 books, I do get carried away and tend to throw myself into my projects. :)

Menehune, glad you liked it! Easy and tasty looking with my favorite ingredients are what I tend to look for.

Annie, doesn't that quesadilla look good! Me too. :) Maybe further down the line as I practice more, I will challenge myself a bit more. I didn't get the chance to visit the other Costco to look for Homer's Odyssey over the weekend but since I'm still off today, :) I'll go see if they have it. If they don't, I'm sure B&N will. I am really looking forward to reading it after reading your wonderful book review.

Thanks again everyone. Hope you all had a great Holiday weekend. Have a great day today!
