Saturday's PhotoHunting: Sports

Soccer is a very popular sport in Italy and around the world.  Last year while visiting the San Luca Church in Praiano on the Amalfi Coast of Italy I discovered a very lively game of soccer being played just above the church.

Most of the Amalfi Coast towns are built on steep hill sides where flat sections can be hard if not impossible to find.  But with their love for the game this small soccer field with imitation grass and enclosed by a high wired fence is a source of great excitement on this pleasant Sunday afternoon.

There are no big bleachers here, because there's really no room.  Instead handrails along the side and above the fenced in field is where the fans can enjoy the competition.  I stood in between two very enthusiastic fans and became caught up in the cheering frenzy.  It wasn't hard to do since I'm a sports fan anyway and staying in Praiano for three weeks gave me a sense of hometown pride.  So I cheered along side my fellow residents. :)

The game was quite exciting and it was fun cheering on our team. During timeouts, the view of the amalfi coast and the beautiful green Maiolica tiled cupola of the Church of San Luca located just in front of the field was a wonderful distraction.  :)

  2. Hi Kathy --

I used to have this idea of having a collection of cool soccer field/football pitch photos from around the world. That field/pitch you feature in this blog entry would definitely qualify -- nice photos! :)

    1. Hi YTSL, thanks so much for your comments. That sounds like a great photo collection idea. I'm glad I stumbled onto this field. I was visiting the church and kept hearing these cheers and was curious so followed the noise to find this game. It was a fun discovery & I ended up staying to watch the whole game. :)

      Have a wonderful weekend.

  7. Hi everyone, thanks so much for your comments.

Gattina, yes I think you're very much correct. Just like in our American football, the guys go nuts over the sport. Some women too. :)

Annie, yes that view was really amazing and the view from above the soccer field where I was sitting was fantastic. :) I love the green dome of the church too. Yes, I was lucky to be there at the right time and because I hung out after church when it was much quieter, I was able to hear the cheers from the field which lead me to find the game. Fun :)

    Have a wonderful week.
