American Idol Season 11: It's the 80's . . .

Tonight, the Idols take on the songs of the 80's and joining Jimmy Iovine to help the Idols prepare for their performances are two members of the group, No Doubt, Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal.

And here's how the evening went:

DeAndre Brackensick sings I Like It by the 80's group, DeBarge.  I thought he did a great job with the song. It was fun, upbeat and showed off his vocals well.

Elise Testone sings I Want to Know What Love Is by Foreigner.  I am a huge fan of Elise from early on in the season, but I'd have to agree with the judges comments.  I don't think this was the right song for her.  She did a good job but with the right song I think she could've done even better.

Phillip Phillips sings That's All by Genesis. I liked his performance and I thought it was really nice to see his brother perform with him.

Joshua Ledet sings If You Don't Know Me By Now by Simply Red.  I love that song and I loved his performance.  That song requires a whole lot of soul to sound great and soul is what Joshua delivered.  I love the staging too.

Jessica Sanchez sings Whitney Houston's upbeat hit How Will I Know and I loved it!  I enjoyed watching her strut around the stage and opening up amongst the group of teenage boys. It was so cute! I thought this was one of her best performances in the competition.

Hollie Cavanagh sings Flashdance.  Hollie is such a talented artist, but I agree with Steven that she was a bit pitchey during this performance.

Colton Dixon sings Cyndi Lauper's hit, Time After Time.  I love this song and I loved his performance.

Skylar Laine sings Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler. This is one of my favorites songs ever and I loved her country flavor on it.  Loved her performance!

Here's how I rated tonight's individual performances:  Joshua Ledet (by a mile), Jessica Sanchez (by a mile and a quarter), DeAndrea Brackensick, Colton Dixon, Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone, Hollie Cavanaugh.

And here's how I rated tonight's group performances:  Joshua/Jessica sings I Knew You Were Waiting for Me by Whitney Houston; Colton/Skylar's performance of Islands in the Stream by Dolly Parton; Phillip/Elise's performance of Stop Dragging My Heart Around by Stevie Nicks; DeAndre/Hollie's performance of "I'm So Excited by the Pointer Sisters.

It is going to be so sad to see another Idol leave.  I think the most in jeopardy is probably Hollie and Elise.  I think the judges may consider using their only save if Elise is in the bottom but if Hollie lands in the bottom I'm not so sure they will use it.  Good luck Idols!

And that's my Recap. Keep on Rocking AI . . .

  2. Compared to last week, it was a lackluster night, I thought, mainly because of the songs they did. But there were some amazing perfomances (Joshua!) and I enjoyed the duets. I agree completely that they should use the save on Elise but not on Hollie. Thanks for the recap!

  3. Ah, the Joshua/Jessica duet was spectacular! I agree, Annie, hard to compare to last week's show. I sort of ranked how I thought the final outcome would be. Will be interesting to see if it comes to fruition. 1- Colton Dixon (America loves a comeback kid) 2and3 either Joshua or Jessica (they can be interchanged) 4. DeAndrea (his hair will keep him in it and beat out Hollie) 5) Hollie (don't think she appeals to the 'masses') and 5. Elise (sadly, I was pulling for the rocknroller). It will be very sad to see any of them leave. Still lovin Steven's comments.

  4. Hi girls, thanks so much for your thoughts and comments....

Eden, you're very welcome. :) Annie & Menehune (flygirl) watches and also shares their recaps in their comments too. It's fun.

Annie, totally agree about the drop from last week's performance and I also agree with you that I think it's mainly due to the songs they sang. They still have only 3 more shows to use the save and I think tonight could be the night depending on how America Voted. I was going to vote for Elise last night just so she could stay in the competition, but my heart couldn't let me do it because I didn't think she did as good a job. I have a feeling she could be bottom tonight so I hope the judges uses their save (if that happens). :)

M, looking at your list, I noticed that I forgot to rate Colton's individual performance so I edited it. I place him right after DeAndre. But aside from Joshua and Jessica, I think the rest of the group are kind of closer together. I'm also pulling for Elise. I had to giggle with what you said about DeAndrea's hair. I wish I had beautiful hair like his.

Can't wait to "read" about the results. :) Thanks so much for your recaps and comments.

  5. I really thought that America missed the boat this week. Could not believe that Hollie wasn't even in the bottom 2! She must have a bunch of people voting for her. Felt bad for DeAndre and his "sing for your life" performance was so so good. I wish they had saved him!

  6. Hi Annie, I totally agree that America missed the boat. I was totally surprised. I didn't even have him in my bottom three and thought he was better than Phillip and Skylar. I agree, I think Hollie must have a huge following actively voting to keep her in. She's a good singer, but based on her performance, I think she should have gone. I couldn't even watch the show. I think DeAndre has a bright future so that's a good thing. Still, it would've been nice to continue to see him in the competition.

I wish they had saved him too. :(

Thanks so much for your comments Annie, since I was too chicken to watch the show, I appreciate reading your recap on how it went.
