American Idol Season 11: Top 10 Perform Songs by Billy Joel

Tonight, the top 10 Idols performed songs by Billy Joel and guest mentor P. Diddy along with Jimmy Iovine provided tips to help them with their performance.  In addition to the mentoring, famous designer, Tommy Hilfiger was on hand to provide style tips.

And here is how the evening went:

DeAndre Brackensick sings the upbeat song Only the Good Die Young.  I enjoyed hearing him sing something with a bit of edginess to it.  He looked good, he had a lot of energy and I thought that he sang the song really well.

Ericka Van Pelt sings New York State of Mind with a completely different hair do.  I kind of like it because it makes her look younger and more hip like Pink! I love this song and I loved her performance.  Randy is right, she has really strong  vocals.

Joshua Ledet sings She's Got a Way.  This song didn't showcase his style as much as last week's song, but I think he did a pretty good job.

Skylar Laine sings Shameless, a song that I'm not that familiar with. I liked her performance last week better.  But I love her personality and I'm a big fan of hers so I really hope she moves on.

Elise Testone sings Vienna a pretty obscure song that I had never heard of before.  I loved it!  That was a brilliant performance.  I am really becoming a huge fan of Elise.  America she deserves your votes! #05

Phillip Phillips sings Movin Out and I loved his performance. Wanting his music rather than "the" image to come first, Phillip kept his guitar and he kept it grey! :)  Kudos to both Elise and Phillip for staying true to who they are.

Hollie Cavanagh sings Honesty, not one of my favorite songs from Billy Joel.  I'm not sure that this was the right song choice for her.  She sang it well, but I was more "wowed" by her performance last week.

Heejun Han sings My Life.  Let me say that I find Heejun very entertaining and although I liked his performance, it wasn't very good, vocally.  I have to agree with the judges and especially with Steven. I think he might want to take a page from his pal, Phillip, and let the music come first and comedy second.

Jessica Sanchez sings Everybody has a Dream.  My, my, my . . . that was an amazing performance.  Girl, you go get your Dreams! #09

Colton Dixon sings Piano Man. He plays the piano so beautifully.  I enjoyed his performance a lot.

My favorite performances of the night:  Jessica Sanchez, Elise Testone, Phillip Phillips,  DeAndre Brackensick  and Colton Dixon.   And now I'm off to dial in more votes. :)

And that's my Recap. Keep on Rocking AI . . .

  1. Hi Kathy, thanks for the recap. It was interesting to see the ones who chose to ignore the mentors' advice! Heejun's performance was funny but weak; he probably deserves to go home but he might end up getting the votes like Sanjaya did, and one of the E girls (Erika or Elise) might go home instead. I hope not though. It will be an interesting results show!

Hope you're having a great week.

  2. Hi Annie, thanks for your recap too. I thought the mentoring was pretty good. P. Diddy really kept it real and I thought gave some really good advice (and so did Tommy), but I thought the ones that stayed true to themselves did the right thing and the ones that changed like Erika also did the right thing. I really like Heejun, but I agree with your Sanjaya comparison. He was the weakest and should go home but he could get the popular vote and put the E girls (love that nickname) in jeopardy of going home when they don't deserve it. I think if Elise is bottom, there could be a chance they may use the save because based upon her performance that would be so wrong. You're right tonight's results will be interesting. Hope the voters did the right thing. I did. :) Can't wait to see Hailey perform.

    Have a great day today.

  3. Thought your top contestants matched my list too. A little surprised that 1) EVD got voted off and 2) the judges didn't use their saves. Think the quality of the contestants, with the exception of Heejun (sorry) is better than previous years. Thanks for your recaps. I so look forward to reading them. Have a great weekend!

    1. Hi M, I felt bad for EVD so much so that I couldn't watch the rest of the show knowing that she was going to be eliminated. I like Heejun but I think he had the weakest performance and should've gone home. I think with 4 more weeks to go before the final 5, I bet the judges are saving their save in case their top choices like Jessica, Elise, Phillip, Joshua ever undeservingly lands in the bottom. I bet they would've used it on Elise rather than EVD who landed in the bottom. I'm thankful that she didn't because she has become my favorite now. Thanks so much for liking my recap. :)

  4. Well, I felt bad for Erika but am not really surprised. I think the "Vote for the Worst" website has picked Heejun and that might keep him around for a few more weeks. While I agree that he's the one who should have gone home, I thought the judges were kinda harsh and I felt sorry for the crazy guy!

I am glad that Elise got out of the Bottom 3 for a change. Looking forward to next week!

    1. Hi Annie, after I saw that Elise got through I actually had to change the channel because I just couldn't watch Erika get eliminated, so I missed the harsh comments that the judges made on Heejun. I didn't like his performance last week, but I do think he has a wonderful tone and is very talented. I hope next week is R&B or Blues because I think that is where his strength along with Elise is. I voted so much for Elise that my phone's battery went dead. :) I was also really happy for her that she finally got out of the bottom three.

I'm looking forward to next week too. The competition is going to get tougher and tougher and song choice and execution is going to be critical.

I really like Erika so I hope that she gets a record deal. She deserves it.
