PhotoHunt: Veterans/Military

Sacrafice and Honor . . .

I took this photo of a soldier while running the Las Vegas Marathon. He said that in honor of his unit he dedicated himself to running the entire marathon in full military gear! The lighting was a little dark affecting the quality of the photo, but the visual was very compelling to me.

Many thanks to our veterans and military forces (and their families) around the world!

  1. Kathy, it is a very compelling image. Glad you captured it and shared it with us.

Not sure if I'm doing PhotoHunt this week - still looking for something appropriate.

Hope you have a great weekend. The countdown to Scotland is getting shorter!

  3. Kathy, another amazing running photo. I didn't realize that you run marathons I am impressed by you, and the young man in your picture--his running in full military gear shows camaraderie. I actually took my camera with me on my morning run the other day and thought of you!

  4. Hi Maya, thanks so much for your comments. I've done only 4 full marathons and 15 halfs so far, more shorter ones, but don't be impressed by that, I can barely make a 12 minute mile. The fastest I've ever gotten up to was 9 minutes. My goal is to one day do an international race, but my problem is the time commitment to build up that base running. Although I'm not lightening fast and aside from the pain and time commitment, I really just enjoy the experience. Clears my head and gets me outdoors. :)

Like you I was very impressed with this young soldier. I don't know how he did it but he did! I bumped into him along the course and although he took off his jacket and hat he was still carrying his pack. It just exemplified the kind of dedication and honor our brave young men and women have and of the Veterans that gave so much for their countries. Thank you just doesn't seem to say enough to them and their families.

Btw, I'm like you I always like to carry a little camera with me because sometimes you see the most interesting things. . . from reading your blog you seem to really enjoy hiking and running. That's so great. This is interesting . . . my friend and I both agree that our experience hiking up the Yosemite half dome was much more difficult then running our first marathon. The one similarity however, is that the day after both experiences I couldn't walk up and down the stairs without feeling some kind of pain...:)

Thanks again for your comments Maya, Have a great weekend!

  5. Great photo, Kathy. I cannot even imagine running a marathon in full military gear. I ran a half-marathon several years ago and found that really gruelling. Add 50 pounds of equipment and I never would have been able to walk the route, let alone run it.

Many congratulations to you on running four marathons, and 15 halfs. That's a great achievement.

  6. Kathy, thanks for sharing this amazing photo and the message that this brave soldier carried with him.

Your trip is almost here! I'll be checking your blog everyday to make sure I don't miss your send-off party. ;)

I'm not doing PH today either because I want to keep my daughter's baby pix on the top of the blog, at least until Sunday night. We've been celebrating all week long and we'll continue next week in southern California.

Thank you for your sweet b-day message to Polaris. Have a great weekend!

  7. Oh, Kathy - don't shortchage yourself:-) only 4 marathons, 15 half-marathons! I base my success in running by minutes not miles -- and I'm grateful that I don't pass out. This photo seems very symbolic to me - in many ways. I hold a lot of gratitude to the men and women who go to great limits for our freedom. Many thanks for taking the time out of packing to blog....menehune

  10. Hi Kathy,

Just wanted to stop by to say Bon voyage, Safe Travels, and have a blast! I can imagine how excited you are (and how busy you must be with last minute preparations). I can't wait to hear all about it!

    Have fun! Annie

  11. Hi Kathy, if I’m not mistaken, you are probably on your way to Scotland. Just wanted to stop by and wish you a wonderful trip. I’m going to be in southern California for the next seven days but will check your blog for that very first post from Scotland. Have fun and take lots of pictures of the gorgeous sunsets, stunning castles and the cute Highland cows.

Safe travels and have a great time, dear friend!

  12. Hi Everyone, thanks so much for all of your comments. Sorry for the delays in my response, I haven't been on my blog because of my last minute planning. A big lesson for me is don't wait until the last minute. :)

Sandra glad you liked the photo. You are so right about how gruelling long distance running can be. And to add 50 pounds is just unheard of to me. Kudos to him though for finishing. The human will is unmeasurable! I have this glass vase filled with all my finisher's medals but I have to say that the first marathon and the experience of training for it is my most prized pocession. I'm sure you know what I mean by that. It is an amazing journey that pretty much changed my life.

Maria, wow that is so great that you are continuing Polaris' birthday celebration this week in Southern California. It is so sweet of you to take time out of your trip to stop by and leave a wonderful message on my blog. Not sure where you are visiting but the weather here is beautiful and perfect so I'm sure you and your daughter are having a wonderful time. It's too bad I leave for Scotland while you are touring Southern California. Have a fabulous mother-daughter trip! And I shall definitely post some photos of castles and those beautiful Highland cows. Take care and safe travels to you and Polaris too.

M,glad you liked my photo and you are right it is very symbolic of the kind of dedication and courage our young men and women have. I have so much appreciation for them and for our veterans. It is for this reason that I have never missed voting in an election! So many sacrafices for our privilage to vote and it is the least that I can do to honor them. It's cool to find out that you also run!

Girasoli, glad you liked my photo. To walk or run in those stiff boots is incredible to me. And for 26.2 miles. Yikes!

Barb, my thoughts and prayers also go out to all the men and women in service today as well as our Veterans.

Annie, thanks so much for stopping by and for your Bon voyage. I will probably write up my last posts tonight and post them before I leave. It has been so busy for me the last few days but I'm hanging in there. I just got done with mapping out my trip on Sky over the weekend which is why I haven't been on my blog. Last night I started to pack and tomorrow I will have to clean my house and do some last minute errands and then I'm off! And you're so right I am very excited.

Nancy, thanks so much for your comments too on my other post. I appreciate it.

Thanks so much again everyone! Have a great day and I will catch up with what's been happening with everyone tonight when I get home. :)
