PhotoHunt: Lock

Who knew that a simple lock can symbolize an unbreakable love! Here, hundreds of locks are left by couples from around the world at the monument to Benvenuto Cellini located on the Ponte Vechio Bridge in Florence, Italy.

More love locks can also be found at the Ponte Milvio in Rome, Italy, on the Great Wall in China, on the Love Lock Fence on the Nam Shan Tower in Seoul, Korea, in the city of Pécs in Hungary and on the Bridge of Love in Kiev, Ukraine.

  1. Kathy, this is so awesome! How did I miss this when I was in Florence on that bridge? That is so cool that it happens in so many different places around the world. Excellent and unique take on this week's theme!

Hope you are having a great weekend. I fell asleep and missed the Adam interview, I am bummed!

    Happy Saturday!

  2. Hi Annie, I saw this in 2005 and a bunch of us from our group tour went out walking after arriving in Florence and just happened across it. We didn't know what it was and I snapped a photo just because it was so odd and then we later found out about the tradition from our Tour Director.

I konked out before the interview too! :( I should've recorded it but konked out before I set the VCR too! Here's a youtube on it:

    Enjoy your Saturday! :)

  6. Thank you for this photo and for the info about the locks. Funny, I never knew about this either. Also loved the Adam Lambert interview. I totally missed it so thank you. I really enjoy his ability to be comfortable with who he is and appreciate his honesty. He was lucky to have such wonderful parents. His mom is awesome.

  7. I’ve heard of the locks on the Ponte Vecchio on Slowtalk but never saw them in person. Had no idea they could be found in other places. I think it is an interesting and meaningful custom.

Have a fun and relaxing weekend!

(thanks for the link to Adam’s interview. I’ll be watching later)

  8. Great shot. I was hoping someone would post a picture of these locks. We totally missed them when we were in Florence (pre-Slow Travel) and heard about them a couple of years later. I want to check them out if we ever get back.

  10. Hi Everyone, thanks so much for your comments.

Candi, glad you liked the photo. I was lucky to have stumbled on to this scene while exploring Florence the night we arrived there. Didn't know what it was. A trip back to Florence would be excellent!

Barb, thanks for your comments. That was a great interview and I too was so impressed with his mother and the relationship that had. It's great that he has such understanding and supportive parents and you can just tell by watching that video. I loved the story of how he first came out with her while driving home after one of his performances. It's no wonder that he is such a nice guy. Family upbringing at its best!

Maria, I didn't know about this tradition too even when we saw it. They don't even know how the tradition really started and actually putting the locks is illegal and if caught people can be fined because of the cost to constantly cut off locks. But couples keep coming and keep on following the tradition. And when I was researching the name of that location, I was also surprised to read about other places around the world. I think it's romantic.

Hope you like the interview! Have a nice relaxing Sunday too!

Marta, thanks. I was thinking that someone was going to post this shot too. Everyone was so creative with this theme and went in all wonderful and unique directions with it. Very cool. Hope you get back to Florence!

Girasoli, I didn't see the one in Rome, but did stumble upon this one in Florence. There were just hundreds of them. I read that there is a vendor near there that sells "locks". How convenient. I was wondering why all the locks look so similar! :) Glad you liked the post.

Thanks again everyone. Have a great Sunday!

  13. Kathy, thanks so much for finding the link to that interview. I'm so glad I got to see it, it was great. He is such a wonderful guy and I agree, his mom seems so cool. Loved that little clip of him rehearsing that David Bowie song "Fame"! And how cute was that when he said he's smooched with girls after a few drinks and it was fun. I was cracking up at him!

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing and can't wait for his album this fall!

Leslie, that's so cool that you'll be able to visit Florence this year! Maybe while crossing the Ponte Vechio you'll come across these love locks too! I'm looking forward to reading more about your trip.

Annie, I really enjoyed that interview as well. He really is such a nice guy. And I loved that clip of him rehearsing Fame! He should record it! His line at the end was very cute! :) I just can't wait for his CD to come out too. I'm sure it will be a big seller.

Flygirl, glad you liked the post and I also found that tradition interesting and was surprised that it happens in places all around the world too. Hope you enjoyed your weekend and have a great day!
