Cádiz, Spain

Cádiz, also known as the "tacita de plata" meaning "the silver cup" lays claim to being Europe's oldest city. It is said to be 3,000 years old and is almost surrounded entirely by water. Built on what was once an island, Cádiz today has two principal parts: the central or historic quarter with narrow streets and plazas, completely surrounded by fortified walls. And the newer part of the city, outside the walls.

Cadiz will be one of two White Villages (the other being Ronda) that I will be visiting in Andalusia. Here I will take the 24-Hour Hop on/Hop off Bus Tour to visit some of the City's main attractions like the Cadiz Cathedral known as Cathedral Nueva (new Cathedral). This is a large Baroque and Neo-Classical church with a distinct yellow tiled Dome that seems to stand out against the white buildings surrounding it. I'll also see Las Puertas de Tierra (translated the Doors of Land), which establishes the limit between the old city and the extra walls of the new city.

It was here that the very famous explorer, Christopher Columbus, set sail on two of his epic voyages to America. Very cool!

And what would a visit to Cadiz be without making my way to their famous beaches. I read that there are some spectacular sunsets along the beachfront promenade. Sweet!

I'm looking forward to my visit to Cádiz! Who knows I may even do a little Jerez tasting! :)

  2. You have to do a Jerez tasting! I’ll be there a few weeks before you and I’ll make sure to leave some Jerez for you ;-)

  3. Hi Annie, Cadiz does look pretty cool! I don't know what it is but I tend to be drawn to places near or around water.

I also have to find the ancient Roman theatre that is supposedly next to one of the churches. Apparently it was only recently discovered. Even in Spain I am reminded of Italy! :)

Have a great evening and week Annie!

  4. Hi Maria, you're so kind . . . the good news is since I'm a light drinker, you don't really have to leave that much behind for me (maybe 4 glasses max). . . so definitely feel free to enjoy all the Jerez you and your husband desire! :)

Have a great evening and week Maria!

  8. Hey Kathy, I finally found "Spain: On the Road Again" on my local PBS website and it starts this Friday night! And they are going to be re-running the first episode a bunch of times all weekend long. I can't wait!

  9. Hi Annie, that's great! I hope you enjoy it. So far my PBS station is only showing one episode and that is this Sunday at 6:00 pm or is it 5:00 pm? I'd better check it again so I don't miss it. It's the one on Madrid which I am so happy to see because that's my first stop!

BTW, I got an e-mail that Sister Wendy is on her way! It's the one you recommended where she goes to the Prado. Cool! Thanks again for that great post. I viewed a little piece of it and I like her already! :)

Have a great evening Annie and enjoy Spain on the Road Again!

  10. Wow -- Cadiz looks spectacular, and thanks to the Moorish influence, very exotic. I can't believe Cadiz is 3,000 years old!

This sounds like a fabulous trip!

  11. Hi Sandra, Welcome home!! Thanks again for blogging while you were on the road. I totally enjoyed reading all of your entries.

Cadiz does look pretty exotic doesn't it! And yes, all my guidebooks say 3,000 years old. And the city looks pretty good for being that old.

I'm looking forward to seeing your photos and hearing more about your trip. Have a great evening Sandra!

  12. Cadiz sounds amazing. My mom spent a day in Ronda during her trip last spring and found it lovely. Have you seen the latest National Geographic Traveler? Spain and Morocco are the cover article this month. You must be excited for your departure date to come!

Yawn...I should try to get some sleep before tomorrow, although I suppose less sleep tonight will help me sleep on the plane tomorrow night! I booked a Yotel room for a few hours during my 8 hour layover in London Friday (imagine - my layover is longer than my flights combined! 6 hrs Hfx to London plus an hour and a half London to Pisa.) But freshening up in the Yotel should allow me to arrive in Florence in fairly good shape - I hope!

  13. Hi Anne, I really think I'm going to have fun in Ronda too and thanks for sharing your mom's comments with me. I think you'll probably get a good sleep on the plane, hoping your excitement doesn't keep you awake. It's very interesting that you will be in a Yotel, that is so cool and I'm really looking forward to hearing about your experiences with that. I hope you take some great photos. I hope you went straight to bed after this post. Wishing you Safe travels and a wonderful trip! Take care!

  15. Oh, I'm so glad you were able to get Sister Wendy before you go to the Prado! Can't wait to hear what you think about her. I think watching it before you go might really help you enjoy that museum more.

And I can't wait to hear about Anne's experience with the Yotel - I've never known anyone who stayed in one of those!

  16. Hi Annie, yes I can't wait to see Sister Prado's tour. I also think watching it will help me to enjoy my visit to Prado. I have notes on what I want to see so I will take notes from her DVD and make sure to review them before I visit the Prado. I'm very excited! In fact I have to remember to book my tickets before I leave.

It's very cool that Anne is staying at a Yotel. In fact, maybe she's in her Yotel right now! There's some great blogging and traveling going on and it will be an awesome five months coming up. Very exciting!
