Light the Passion, Share the Dream . . .Beijing, China--Summer Olympics 2008

A B2V team mate who was lucky enough to run this leg, sent me this photo . . . can you guess what it is?

From Athens, Greece and through the streets of LA to Beijing . . . it's the traditional Torch Relay that carried the Olympic Flame 137,000 kilometers through 130 cities around the world in 130 days and ended in Chengdu when the last torchbearer Yu Zhirong, one of the many heros of the recent Sichuan earthquake, arrived to light the cauldron. In tonight's opening ceremony, the sacred flame will be lit at the start of the Olympic Games and will stay lit until the games conclude on August 24.

Tonight, don't forget . . . the "Opening Ceremony" for the Summer Olympic Games 2008! Whoo hoo!

  1. I'm excited! I plan to hunker down in front of the TV all evening long tonight. I think it's going to be a beautiful Opening Ceremony.

And look at your countdown clock: 90 days!

Oh, I'll probably mention this on my blog but have you heard about the new PBS show, "Spain....On the Road Again" ? It's a show about the food of Spain with Gwyneth Paltrow and Mario Batali going on a road trip all over Spain. It's supposed to premiere sometime soon. I sure hope my local PBS station shows it!

Have a great weekend watching the Olympics! Annie

  3. Hi Annie, sounds like what I'll be doing. I really love the opening ceremonies and all the special stories of all the athletes. I know it already took place this morning and from what I've heard it was spectacular so I'm looking forward to our primetime coverage here in California.

Maybe it's already airing where you live and you're already enjoying it! Cool! I think I'm going to tape it, so I can re-watch any important moments.

I have not heard of the PBS show, "Spain . . . On the Road Again"? Thank you so much for mentioning it to me. I will try to find it here where I live so I can watch it. I would love to learn more about the food in Spain. Hopefully, they'll feature some of the cities/towns I'll be visiting.

    Whoo Hoo . . . 90 days and counting! I'm sooooo excited!

Enjoy watching the opening ceremony Annie! And have a great weekend!

  6. It just ended here. Very cool opening ceremony!

  7. It was awesome, wasn't it? Amazing and beautiful. I have to confess that I fell asleep for a bit in the middle (TV does that to me!) but I'm so glad that I woke up and was able to see them light the flame - that was SO incredible! And I love that little boy who was walking with the Chinese athletes.

Let the games begin! Hope you have a great weekend! Annie

  8. Hi Girasoli, that was probably one of "the" best opening ceremony I have ever seen for the Olympics. I'm glad that I taped it too! I'm just waking up since it ended soooo late, I had no idea it was going to be so long but it was done so well, it was worth the time.

Enjoy watching the games & have a great weekend!

  9. Good morning Annie! :)

Wow, that was one long opening ceremony. That was probably "the" best opening ceremony that I have ever seen. I loved all the artistic presentations and history. I remember in college one of the most interesting classes I took was World History on China and I was surprised that I remembered many of the things that I learned while I was watching the show.

Great artistry! I mean the costumes the synchronization was awesome.

I too loved the little boy! Adorable, and to think about how he survived the earthquake and rescued his friends. An appropriate selection for him to have an important role on the World's stage.

I thought the lighting of the torch was just "off the hook!!"

I think China did a brilliant job! And yes, let the games begin. Whoo Hoo!

Ps. I also dosed off a bit too! I think I missed a couple of countries entering the stadium!:)

    Have a great weekend Annie!

  10. I don't see the message I sent out last night so it probably got lost in cyberspace.

The Opening Ceremony was spectacular! I'm amazed at the numbers: 22,000 people, 15,000 costumes, 43,000 fireworks lit. WOW! Loved seeing all the children and the lighting of the torch was awesome.

I'm glad that I hit the record button just as the spectacle started because I also missed some parts just before the Parade of Nations. I'll probably watch it this weekend with my hubby since he was working and missed it.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the games!

  11. Hi Maria, last night's opening ceremony was definitely spectacular. And the numbers you mentioned are pretty incredible. They did have a lot of fireworks going on, but it was all very cool.

I'll probably watch parts of the ceremony again too!

Enjoy the games too and have a great weekend!

P.s. I hope it wasn't me that did something to your message Maria. I've double posted on my comments to Annie and accidently published on another post. It must be my excitement over the games.

  12. I bet that China World history class was fascinating. I didn't take a history class but I did take two religion classes...one on Buddhism and one on Taoism. Really enjoyed both of them. Such a rich culture and very spiritual - it was really reflected in that opening ceremony.

Saw the American volleyball girls win tonight!

  13. Hi Annie, cool that you took those two classes. I really enjoy learning about different cultures. I hope that I get a chance to visit there one day.

Whoo hoo, our two women teams won their first matches. The big shocker was that out top men's team lost by a 23rd seed team. They didn't even win a set. Big upset. I hope they don't get psyched out by that loss and come back to win all their matches from this point on.

I think its been great so far! Several gold medals already! Whoo Hoo!

I just got back in time to watch Team USA battle China in our first basketball match up. This should be good!

    Have a great week Annie!

  14. It's interesting reading this with the difference in time. Here the games are on early in the morning and then at night NOT LIVE even though it says live for the swimming. I just finished watching parts of the opening ceremonies again. Loved the tai chi part and of course the flame. It was also cool watching the Chinese march in. I could however do with less of Mr. Bush on my TV! Usually I turn my station whenever he comes on. I may have to start taping everything and then watch it a little behind to zip through his time.

Three of the women's volleyball players are from Univ. of Hawaii. They are so talented. It is great watching them play! I also watched a little bit of soccer in the middle of the night. Woke up with a mild migraine and watched the end of both the Italia game on one station and the US game on the other (flipping back and forth).

Gymnastics tonight!! Of course being one that reads the end of the book, I already peeked at the results online. :) Happy Sunday!!

  15. Hi Girasoli, I'm pretty confident after reading your comments that you and I share the same politics! :)

The girls volleyball win was great. I know that Willoby (sp?) and Amoh is from Hawaii, but I can't remember who the third girl is? That was a fun match to watch.

Well,if I happen to doze off tonight especially since tomorrow is a work day, I just might have to read the end of the book too!

Sorry to hear about your migraine. Hope it gets better. Have a nice evening!

  16. Heather Bowen. I watched part of the Cuba/US game last night. Not a pretty sight.

  17. Hi Girasoli, thank so much for giving me that third girl's name. They mentioned it during the game but I couldn't remember it. After reading your comments I went on NBC's site and learned that USA lost to Cuba! Darn!

They had some problems with Japan so maybe it's no surprise they had problems with Cuba. I hope they regroup and win their next matches. It would be nice if they can get to the medal rounds! I'll cross my fingers.

Thanks again. Have a great week!
