When perfect strangers meet...

Yesterday I finally got done with my Jury Duty. This was my very first time serving on an actual Jury and it lasted 5 weeks. Yikes! I have to say that the most interesting part of serving on a jury was the experience of being thrown into this environment with 14 other perfect strangers. These are people that I would normally walk right by on the street without so much as a glance and yet in the last month I have had the chance to get to know them pretty well and I actually really like them.

They all got to learn about my Spain trip and other travels. One really nice lady gave me some tips that she got from a Spanish friend of hers. She also gave me the name of this very cool and hip Spanish restaurant in Hermosa Beach that prepares Tapas and will hold a Special Spanish Wine Tasting event later this month. And then there was the lady who is currently taking this on-line course to get her Public Administration Degree so she can promote up in her job. I'll never forget this very sweet retired lady who was given a cell phone by her grown up son and was just learning how to use it. Or what about the TRW Engineering Director that is the spitting image of Tom Brokaw. I really enjoyed my conversations with the Air Traffic Controller and how about that really nice guy who is a Restaurant Manager in Hollywood and the list goes on . . .

In the end, I can honestly say that I enjoyed meeting and getting to know these people and I am really looking forward to seeing them again as we are planning a little Get Together to discuss the case and hopefully other much more interesting things!

After the verdict was reached and we parted ways, I had just enough time to rush over to catch the last few matches of the day at the Hermosa Beach AVP. Today, we'll be watching the final matches. First up, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.

Here are a few highlights from yesterday afternoon: It was a spectacular Southern California Day!

  1. Wow, great action shots!

Your jury duty sounds interesting. How cool that you are planning a GTG! I was called once, but did not get selected. I was quite relieved since my county courthouse is a two hour drive from my house and I was NOT looking forward to making that drive twice a day for who knows how long. (Otherwise, I would have been fine doing my civic duty and all.)

  2. Hi Girasoli, thanks for your kind comments. I think action shots are a great way for me to practice my photography so I enjoy them. Plus I'm a big Beach Volleyball fan. I just checked your blog and notice that you have 12 days left before your trip. I hope you'll be able to continue to blog from Italy. Have a great trip!

Hi Anne, thanks for your comments. Wow, you would have a two hour drive for Jury Duty! That's pretty far. I'm the complete opposite. I drive two hours (RT) to work and my Jury Duty was only a 10 minute drive from my house. The best part of Jury Duty was definitely getting to meet and know my fellow jurors. They were very cool and it'll be fun to see them again later this week. In a strange way it felt wierd to have this heavy responsibility on someone else's life. But it did feel good to do my civic duty and if anything it was certainly an interesting experience.

  3. Wow, five weeks of jury duty! That is a long time. I did it last year (I've been called a bunch of times, but last year was the first time I've actually been on a jury). But my case only lasted 3 days. I enjoyed the experience - it made me have faith in our system because I really think we came up with a fair decision.

But I don't know if I would have enjoyed five weeks of it! I'm glad you liked your fellow jurors.

    And great volleyball photos!

  4. I enjoyed reading about your jury duty experience. I've only served once and it lasted six days. It was very interesting and we all got along but it never reached the level of friendship of your group.

    Great action shots!

  6. Oops, I accidently wrote my e-mail address instead of my name in my original reply so I had to delete it. It was my trigger happy finger hitting the "publish your comment" button before I proofed my post.

Thanks for your comments about my photos Maria & Annie!

Jury duty was definitely an interesting experience and I'm glad that I was able to make some contribution to the judicial process. Lucky for me, my employer pays for unlimited jury service.

My fellow jurors were all pretty cool, but I found that the people who I clicked with the most were the ones who I shared travel interests with. No big surprise there. :)
