Going for Gold . . .

Hey, hey, hey . . . it's AVP Time! This weekend is the AVP Crocs Tour at Hermosa Beach and I think we could be witnessing future gold medalists (Misty May and Kerri Walsh) play this weekend. They will be representing the USA in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China this summer and I can't wait. On the men's side, I think Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers have a great chance to medal as well. They're not as consistent as the women's team, but I think they should at the very least medal.

I'm such a huge fan of the Olympics that when I was in Munich, Germany for a couple of days in 2006 I went to visit the Olympic Park which was built for the 1972 Munich Games. In more ways then we would like, I think the 1972 Olympics will always be remembered for both the athletic excellence that was achieved by many of the athletes during the spirit of competition and for the unforgettable tragedy that unfolded. It was an upsetting time in Olympic history and it changed the way security measures are implemented for all future Olympic Games since then.

Once I figured out the system(which by the way is very easy in Munich), I got on their subway and it brought me directly to the Olympic Park. I spent a very pleasant morning walking around and taking in the historical significance. It's so great to learn that the Olympic Park was transformed into a public recreation facility for all the residents to enjoy. It was so cool being there and seeing everything in person. Here's the famous swimming venue:

  2. Thanks Anne, I thought it was cool too. It was acutally kind of humid inside, but I enjoyed going in. I was hoping to catch someone diving but people were just doing laps. The whole park was pretty amazing.

  3. Love those photos! Where were you when you took the one of the park? It almost looks like you were in a plane!

  4. Hi Annie, I took it from the Olympic Tower (located in the park itself). It's a pretty high tower, so it really does look like I could've been on a plane. It was pretty cool because you could see the Alps in the distance.

I think it cost me 9 euros to take the loooooong elevator ride up. Actually, that part was kind of scary (remember the beginning of "Speed" with Keanu Reeves). Yikes!

Thanks again for the comments! Have a nice weekend!

  5. That was a very high tower, then! Sometimes heights make me a little sqeamish (but I do enjoy the views).

You have a nice weekend too!

  6. Munich's Olympic Park really is pretty amazing. I was there for work a few years ago and I have to say I couldn't quite shake off the feelings inspired by its tragic history from 1972. That said, it is a beautiful venue.

You have some great photos, the aerial shots are remarkable!

  7. Hi Sandra, thanks for your comments.

It's funny that you mention your experience, because as much as I was really excited to see the park in person (being a huge fan of the Olympics), it was hard not to remember the tragedy that occurred while I was walking around.

But as you said, the Olympic Park is a pretty amazing place. I thought Germany did an amazing job and I'm especially glad that it is now a public venue for everyone to enjoy. They even hold concerts there as well. Very cool.
